Entry-Level Mechanical Engineer

Locations: • Champaign, Illinois Primary Responsibilities: • Perform work as a mechanical engineer in all aspects of project development, including client coordination, pre-design services, final design services, meetings, site visits, and project management. • Conduct existing conditions surveys and prepare PFDs, P&IDs, layouts, sections, elevations, and details as appropriate to document relevant conditions. • Conceptualize the initial process, mechanical, and plumbing design approach for projects having overall responsibility for the engineering and/or design work related to process, mechanical and plumbing systems, and code requirements. • Coordinate design and schedule with other disciplines, such as architectural, structural, electrical, and controls to resolve a variety of complex problems (i.e., conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, difficult coordination requirements). • Organize and prepare process, mechanical, and plumbing construction drawings (PFDs, P&IDs, layouts, sections, elevations, and details as appropriate), technical specifications, contract documents, and estimates. • Develop engineering solutions and designs, cost estimates, bill of materials, and schedules for projects. • Have knowledge of applicable codes and standards related to mechanical, piping, and plumbing systems. • Participate in contract bidding process, prepare and issue responses to contractor requests for information, and prepare and issue bulletin and change order documentation. • Provide field engineering and construction services, such as shop drawing review and on-site observation. Being licensed as a Professional Engineer is preferred but not required. • Experience: Entry level. However, Henneman Engineering is open to considering a diverse range of experience and skill levels. Experience with AutoCAD is preferred. Make available to maintenance, requested equipment for preventative maintenance. Utilize and ensure others use all the proper PPE and safety equipment as well as safety standards and procedures. Notify supervisor of any problems and/or difficulties, as well as possible solutions. Department is kept neat and orderly at all times. Qualifications and Experience: 1 year of experience in a manufacturing environment with increasing levels of responsibility. In this role, you will assume multi-project responsibilities for HVAC, plumbing, fire protection and specialty piping system engineering and design for buildings including healthcare, commercial, industrial, and educational facilities. It is client-facing and reports to a senior engineering manager, who will also provide mentoring and training opportunities to help you grow. Job Activities: • Prepare accurate HVAC, plumbing, controls, and specialty piping system construction drawings, including specifications. • Perform construction administration, including submittal reviews and project revisions during construction. • Prepare preliminary schematics through final designs for projects, including calculations, equipment selection, and layouts. • Actively engage in and assume responsibility for code research and application. • Interface with other disciplines, clients, and contractors, leading projects to successful completion • Provide leadership, mentoring, and coordination of the production staff. • Assist in maintaining project design budgets and schedules while pursuing quality results. • Perform quality control reviews of HVAC and plumbing design work done by others. • Assist in business development activities, including writing fee proposals and conducting project scoping walks with potential clients. Specific Requirements include: • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Architectural Engineering • 10+ years of professional experience in HVAC and plumbing design for buildings. • A Professional Engineering License (PE) is required. • Prior management or mentoring of staff required. • Design experience relative to medium/large commercial and institutional facilities • Strong familiarity with Revit, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office Suite • Experience with Carrier HAP, Trane Trace, or similar • Strong and communicative team player in a multi-disciplinary environment, able to fully lead projects from start to finish. • Excellent oral and written communication skills • Ability to contribute to several projects simultaneously.
