Legrand has an exciting opportunity for a Design Engineer II to join the EWS/Wiremold Team in West Hartford, CT. This position is open due to promotional growth within the organization, highlighting our focus on internal career development and advancement. The Design Engineer II is responsible for the design of new products for the Wire and Cable Management business. This role works within a cross-functional team to develop products from concept through to production and supports ongoing design maintenance for existing product lines. Key responsibilities include developing, evaluating, and validating product designs; creating specification and documentation packages; supporting preproduction builds; and overseeing the transfer to production. What Will You Do? • Performs design and development work on new and existing products for use in electromechanical products. This includes reviewing, recommending, and appraising design work done by satellite facilities/vendors and the offshore design team. • Work with the Marketing Product Line Manager to develop the product specification. Gain consensus on design with marketing and manufacturing. Determine the appropriate codes and standards, testing requirements, end-user preferences and trends, and competitive product analysis. • Create sketches, 3D files, and prototype designs to provide different options to satisfy the product requirements and be used for customer feedback. Evaluate concepts to choose the best design for the business. Work with the offshore team to create final 3D models, assemblies, and drawings to refine, develop, and finalize the design. • Research, read, and understand competitive patents. Work with Patent Attorneys to avoid patent infringement. Protect the company’s intellectual property by obtaining patents. • Refine and complete the design through modeling, prototyping, testing, analysis, piloting, and inspection of processes and first articles. Work closely with Advanced Manufacturing, Tool Shops, and Manufacturing to procure prototypes and production product components. • Oversee the completion of product documentation to support production, including engineering drawings and specifications, bills of materials, and quality requirements and testing. • Investigation and analysis of new materials, components, technology, and engineering practices. • Work with listing agencies to conduct and develop standards testing as required. • Managing projects to rapid and effective completion including spanning departmental gaps. • Performs other similar and related duties as required. Education: BS in Mechanical Engineering Experience: 3-5 years' experience in design engineering, preferably developing plastic injection molded, cast aluminum, and sheet metal products Skills/Knowledge/Abilities: • Must have sound technical knowledge and design skills. Must be able to apply logical and scientific thinking principles to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. • Demonstrated creativity in the development of new product design concepts. Ability to create sketches, 3D files, and prototype designs to express different options that are used to satisfy the product requirements. • Must be able to incorporate eco-design principals into new product development, as well as identify ways to improve environmental impact of existing products. • Requires strong organizational and time management skills, attention to detail, and the ability to effectively handle multiple priorities. • Must have strong analytical skills and proven ability to efficiently research and summarize information effectively and make recommendations based upon analysis. • Must be highly collaborative and able to work in a team-based environment.
