Mechanical Engineer

The Mechanical/Mechatronics Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and supporting mechanical and electromechanical systems used across new product development, automation, and production environments. This role combines mechanical design expertise with hands-on fabrication knowledge and systems integration skills, ensuring that equipment, components, and assemblies meet performance, reliability, and manufacturability requirements. Essential Responsibilities Design & Development • Design and develop mechanical and mechatronic systems, assemblies, and components—including mechanisms, fixtures, automation systems, and tooling. • Apply mechanical engineering principles in combination with electrical, pneumatic, and control elements to create integrated solutions. • Generate 3D models, detailed drawings, BOMs, and fabrication specifications. • Develop and prototype custom parts using welding, forming, machining, cutting, and other metal fabrication processes. • Provide mechanical and mechatronic support throughout all phases of new product development. Fabrication & Manufacturing Support • Collaborate with internal and external fabrication teams to ensure manufacturability, proper material selection, and adherence to specifications. • Provide technical support to production, maintenance, and engineering teams for equipment installation, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement. • Improve existing systems through design modifications, component upgrades, and performance optimization. • Create assembly procedures, test plans, and standard work instructions. Systems Integration & Testing • Integrate sensors, actuators, motors, pneumatic systems, and control hardware into mechanical assemblies. • Execute system testing, debugging, validation, and performance optimization. • Conduct root-cause analysis (RCA) and implement corrective actions for mechanical and electromechanical failures. • Work closely with automation, electrical, and controls engineers to ensure cohesive system functionality. Qualifications & Experience • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or related field. • Strong mechanical design background with hands-on knowledge of welding, machining, forming, cutting, and standard fabrication practices. • Proficiency with 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, Inventor, or CREO. • Familiarity with electrical/controls fundamentals (PLC interfaces, sensors, actuators, wiring basics). • Experience with automation systems, robotics, pneumatics, or electromechanical devices preferred. • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, fabrication prints, and schematics. • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills for mechanical and electromechanical systems. • Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate across engineering disciplines. • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines. • Hands-on aptitude for prototyping, assembly, and testing.

Mechatronic Engineer

Summary The Mechatronics Engineer will design, develop, and support mechanical and electro-mechanical systems used in manufacturing, automation, and product applications. This role requires strong mechanical engineering fundamentals combined with hands-on metal fabrication knowledge, CAD proficiency, and experience integrating mechanical components with electrical, pneumatic, or control systems. The engineer will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to improve equipment performance, support new product development, and enhance production processes. Production/Manufacturing Engineer

Summary: In this role, the Production Engineer is the process expert who will drive the process of designing and developing new fuel cell manufacturing processes / equipment implementing automatization and productivity gain. You will be responsible for reviewing and approving design drawings, specifications, and control plans. Partnering with other members of the Value Stream Team, including quality, product, and industrial engineers, you will develop and implement process requirements to continuously improve safety, cost, quality, production capacity, and process yields. Responsibilities: • Supports the research, design, development, and implementation of new or improved manufacturing production processes including but not limited to value stream mapping, process documentation, PFMEA,, Risk Assessments and control plans. • Manages new equipment projects from specification development through implementation. This includes but is not limited to: research, process development, preparing the request for quotation, negotiation of equipment supply contracts, management of budget, and overall project management and implementation including release to operations for routine use. • Champions continuous improvement projects aimed to reduce costs, improve part quality, or improve process ergonomics • Review and analyze process data to help increase yields and look for root cause of issues that occur in production. • Responsible for and/or participating on cross functional teams which may include R&D, Production Development, Facilities, and Environmental Health & Safety • Acts as a manufacturing liaison to Design Engineering and R&D. • Coordinates and participates in product and process development trials on the production floor while providing leadership and guidance to process operators and others during trials. • Reviews and approves engineering drawings and material specifications. • Generating work instructions and Operational Control plans for shop the shop floor • Supports safety assessments equipment and assembly processing with knowledge of NFPA codes and OSHA regulations. • Performs other duties and tasks as directed by Management Education: BS or MS in Engineering from an ABET accredited college or university is required. Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, or Electrical preferred; other types of engineering degrees will be considered depending on experience. Master's degree is a plus. Experience: Minimum 3 years of experience in a similar commercial position with equal or greater responsibilities is required. Semi-automated large (~2'x4') mechanical part assembly and inspection experience preferred. Skills and Experience: • Track record of process / equipment implementation and continuous improvement execution • Must have the ability and desire to work in a dynamic, cross-functional production environment. • Must have practical mechanical ability and aptitude. • Must have solid understanding of Mechanical Drawings, testing, and Instrumentation. • Experience in Project Management preferred, with diverse knowledge of engineering materials and production processes preferably in a manufacturing environment that includes chemical processes, thermal processes, and mechanical assembly required. • Proficiency in MS Office Suite required. • Experience of using LEAN tools like 6 Sigma, Gemba walks, 6S, PDCA Method (Plan-Do-Check-Act), etc • Experience troubleshooting automated machinery is strongly preferred. • Experience with 3D modeling (SolidWorks) preferred. • Hands on experience with metal fabrication / machining preferred. • Controls experience (PLC / HMI / ERP) preferred. • Experience of statistics to process controls, interpretation, and summarize data strongly preferred. • Experience with capital equipment procurement and implementation is strongly preferred. • Experience with product risk management, Risk assessments, and change management preferred. • Experience with MS Access and Minitab preferred • Experience in technical writing and specification development preferred. • Understanding of Value Stream Mapping preferred. • Experience with ISO9001/Quality Systems and ERP systems a plus. • Experience with automation is a plus. • Additive Manufacturing knowledge is a plus. Working Environment/Working Conditions: • The position is in-person in our Torrington factory and requires a commitment of 40 hours per week minimum, typically Monday through Friday. • Travel is estimated at up to 10% domestically, with limited international travel as needed. Physical Requirements: • Able to move effectively and timely in and around 200,000+ square foot cement floored manufacturing facility • Lifting, pushing, pulling and placement of manufacturing parts weighing 25lbs or more. • Ability to work with, and around, chemicals, including but not limited to nickel-based compounds, adhesives, and solvents. • Ability to work around furnace area with smoke, dust, and heat (wearing personal protective equipment). • Be able and willing to wear required personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and other PPE as required. • Must be able to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment. • Ability to travel to other company locations as required.
