This role is based in either New London, CT or Hickory, NC, and supports the Data Power & Control sector. The Sr. Mechanical Engineer will focus on creating and verifying the design of opto-mechanical components and assemblies, ensuring the successful validation of both new product lines and cost-saving enhancements through VAVE processes. Whether working independently or within a team, this position is key to product design development, evaluation, and specifications confirmation. Responsibilities include conducting design reviews, endorsing documentation, overseeing preproduction assemblies, and facilitating production transfers. You will also mentor other engineers across various disciplines. Key Responsibilities: • Lead and manage projects related to the design and validation testing of opto-mechanical systems. Collaborate with Product Marketing, Manufacturing, and other engineering personnel throughout the design phases. • Partner with Project Management to keep project timelines and milestone deadlines updated and on track. • Maintain existing opto-mechanical products, implementing design improvements and cost-saving measures through the Engineering Change process. • Design and develop customized opto-mechanical systems using techniques like injection molding, metal shaping, casting, and extrusion. • Perform detailed design evaluations using 2D/3D CAD in SolidWorks, including analyses of kinetics, structure, thermal, and finite element methods. • Conduct studies on materials and tooling costs using DFMA tools and engage with vendors to achieve cost-effective designs. • Collaborate with Product Management to develop technical product requirements and quality protocols. • Facilitate interdisciplinary opto-mechanical design reviews with engineering, manufacturing, and marketing teams. • Work with internal and external partners to expedite prototype validation. • Provide comprehensive test results and analyses for all validation requirements. • Participation in industry-standard bodies is advantageous. • Perform additional related tasks as necessary. Qualifications Education: • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering; Master’s preferred. Experience: • 5-7 years of relevant product engineering experience. • At least 5 years in mechanical or opto-mechanical design. • Familiarity with fiber optics. • Leadership in project management; ideal with some manufacturing experience. Skills & Expertise: • Proficiency with SolidWorks for 3D modeling and simulation. • In-depth understanding of product compliance and environmental processes. • Experience in device-level production and material design. • Competence in processes like MIG/TIG welding, and various coating techniques. • Familiarity with global standards like TIA, IEC, and IEEE. • Expertise in producing technical documentation and data management. • Mastery of engineering analyses including GD&T and CFD methods (optional). • Experience in engineering change processes and ensuring product reliability.
