Mechanical Trades Technician

About the position The Mechanical Trades Technician position at St. Olaf College is a full-time role within the Facilities department, primarily focused on the maintenance and repair of plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. The technician will be responsible for installing and maintaining plumbing systems, which constitutes 50% of the job duties. This includes the installation and repair of toilets, urinals, fixture faucets, and both drain and supply water piping. The technician will also lead plumbing installations during periodic renovation projects and perform drain cleaning and fire system piping inspections. In addition to plumbing responsibilities, the technician will spend 30% of their time installing and maintaining HVAC systems. This involves performing preventative maintenance on HVAC equipment, assisting in diagnosing and repairing HVAC equipment, and helping with the installation and maintenance of HVAC controls. The technician should also be capable of working with steam and chilled water systems. Another 10% of the role involves operating a computerized building automation system, which includes programming building occupancy schedules and monitoring the system for equipment alarms and proper operation. The remaining 10% of the time will be dedicated to other duties as assigned, which may include assisting with campus event setups and performing periodic metal fabrication and welding tasks. The position requires a high school diploma, a Minnesota Journey worker plumbing license, and a valid driver's license. Candidates should have journeyman-level experience in plumbing installation and maintenance, with a preference for those who have completed a trade school or apprenticeship program and possess 5+ years of experience at the journey or master level. The technician must be skilled in using standard tools and equipment, able to diagnose and repair food service equipment, and capable of working independently or with minimal supervision. The role also requires the ability to work under pressure and engage with a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff.
