Mechanic I

The Knox County Engineer's Office is seeking a full-time Mechanic I to join their team. This is a classified, bargaining unit position. Among their many duties, a Mechanic I inspects, tests, repairs and maintains fuel engines, conducts preventative maintenance on equipment, operates welding equipment and cutting torches, snow removal, and minor body work on equipment. Must meet minimum qualifications to apply.35% Inspects, tests, repair and maintain diesel/gasoline fuel engines, electrical, hydraulic, intake, exhaust and related systems; rewiring and adjusting as required; replacing parts such as pressure hoses/fittings, universal joints, carrier bearings and drive shafts as necessary; replace worn bearings, install piston rings, replace clutch discs and pressures plates and other similar activities. 20% Performs preventative maintenance including, but not limited to changing oil and filters; checking and maintaining proper fluid levels such as antifreeze and power steering; charging/replacing batteries; lubricating moving parts; winterizing activities and other related duties. 10% Operates welding equipment and cutting torches to weld and/or cut snowplows, sand spreaders, mowers and other items as needed; dismantle, constructs, repairs and/or maintains bridges, culverts, guardrails and related appurtenances utilizing welding equipment. 10% Performs snow removal activities and spreads salt and/or sand for snow and ice control. 10% Performs minor body work and change/repair tires as necessary. 10% Maintain accurate records (written and computerized) to include maintenance and service reports, order reports, and similar records. 5% Maintain a clean and orderly work area in accordance with departmental guidelines. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Incumbent works under general supervision and follows established policies, procedures, work methods, directives and terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Caution and appropriate safety measures must be exercised when carrying out duties to prevent injury to self, others, and property. Must maintain a telephone at place of residence or a cellular phone. Perform all of the duties of Highway Worker I and all other duties as assigned. This position description in no manner states or implies that these are the only duties and responsibilities to be performed by the position incumbent.Must possess a valid high school diploma or GED; training in diesel engines/construction equipment repair, welding, cutting processes, and fabrication or related work experience. Must possess a valid State of Ohio Driver's License. Ability to: interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, picture, or schedule form and to communicate in common English language; maintain accurate detailed daily records; correctly analyze, identify and solve mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems malfunctions in various county vehicles and construction equipment; interpret and act upon writing instructions, policies and procedures pertaining to work orders and other related assigned duties; to use computer programs to diagnose problems with diesel engines and/or electrical systems; maintain accurate written and computer records reflecting work performed and parts and materials used. EQUIPMENT OPERATED: All light and heavy equipment; diagnostic testing equipment; two-way radio; a variety of small hand/power tools; welding equipment, computer with applicable computer software. INHERENTLY HAZARDOUS OR PHYSICALLY DEMANDING WORKING CONDITIONS: Incumbent's work effort involves prolonged and frequent sitting; walking; climbing; standing; balancing; pushing; pulling; lifting; carrying; bending; kneeling; stooping; hammering; tamping; shoveling and crouching activities using all major muscle groups; must be able to lift 50 pounds. Neck mobility is necessary when operating equipment and/or vehicles. Incumbent must have full and unrestricted use of arms, wrists and fingers to work with and adjust engines and their integral parts; to reach and work with unexposed parts, to use various tools, both manual and power. Must have full and unrestricted use of hip joints, legs and feet to climb up on and down from heavy equipment and to lie on creeper. Job Location: Work may be performed inside a garage/shop area or outdoors in the field; incumbent is exposed to loud noise, dirt, grease, vibrations, acid, electrical and mechanical hazards, chemicals, burns, dust, and periodically to extremes in outside temperatures and weather conditions; exposure to unfavorable health and safety factors such as chemicals, battery acid and recoil from pressurized hoses is frequently present; normal vision, including color and depth perception, and hearing acuity are required due to working on/around and testing heavy motorized equipment; incumbent may be exposed to eye strain in some circumstances and is required to wear personal protective equipment as required while performing work activities.
