Mechanic I

Objectives The Knox County Engineer's Office is seeking a full-time Mechanic I to join their team. This is a classified, bargaining unit position. Among their many duties, a Mechanic I inspects, tests, repairs and maintains fuel engines, conducts preventative maintenance on equipment, operates welding equipment and cutting torches, snow removal, and minor body work on equipment. Essential Functions 35% Inspects, tests, repair and maintain diesel/gasoline fuel engines, electrical, hydraulic, intake, exhaust and related systems; rewiring and adjusting as required; replacing parts such as pressure hoses/fittings, universal joints, carrier bearings and drive shafts as necessary; replace worn bearings, install piston rings, replace clutch discs and pressures plates and other similar activities. 20% Performs preventative maintenance including, but not limited to changing oil and filters; checking and maintaining proper fluid levels such as antifreeze and power steering; charging/replacing batteries; lubricating moving parts; winterizing activities and other related duties. 10% Operates welding equipment and cutting torches to weld and/or cut snowplows, sand spreaders, mowers and other items as needed; dismantle, constructs, repairs and/or maintains bridges, culverts, guardrails and related appurtenances utilizing welding equipment. 10% Performs snow removal activities and spreads salt and/or sand for snow and ice control. 10% Performs minor body work and change/repair tires as necessary. 10% Maintain accurate records (written and computerized) to include maintenance and service reports, order reports, and similar records. 5% Maintain a clean and orderly work area in accordance with departmental guidelines.
