Test Technician - Mechanical

Description Reusable systems are the key to seamlessly connecting Earth and space. A key ingredient to making reusable systems is the ability to test hardware quickly. As a Test Technician working at our Moses Lake Test Site, you will be responsible for building fluid, electronic, and structural test stand systems, preparing the test facility for test operations, troubleshooting test related issues, and supporting general test operations. You will fabricate parts and assemblies from blueprints, drawings, and/or verbal instructions. You will fabricate parts and assemblies using power tools, hand tools, and other typical shop equipment. You will work directly with experienced design and test engineers. You must be ready to stay focused, move fast, self-direct, and learn on the fly. Responsibilities • Bend, proof, and clean stainless steel tubing systems • Safely operate various power tools, saws, and other heavy-duty equipment • Work closely with engineers for test stand maintenance and operations • Support troubleshooting efforts • Safely work around hazardous chemicals and high-pressure systems • Safely operate forklift, telehandler, and man lift • As part of a small team, you will also perform everyday tasks to keep the site running (shipping and receiving, administrative tasks, etc.) Qualifications • High school diploma or equivalent certificate • 1+ years of experience in mechanical fabrication, specifically stainless steel tube bending • Familiar with reading and interpreting schematics and drawings • Experience fabricating custom parts with little to no direction • Familiar with common aerospace fluid connections: 37 degree flare fittings, compression fittings, NPT fittings, ANSI flanges • Familiar with fluid system components: pumps, valves and actuators, filters • Experience with hole layout and drilling • Willing to work outdoors for long periods of time • Able to stoop, bend, crawl, and lift up to 25 lbs. unassisted • Passion for building something with high quality, willing to attend work with a positive and humble attitude, and willing to take ownership of large and small tasks to help the team be successful • Rigorous attention to detail • Unbeatable drive and ownership • Ability to lead • Ability to follow Preferred Qualifications • Experience with welding processes (MIG/TIG) and plasma cutting • Experience working with pressurized systems up to 6,000psi • Experience with crane operations • Experience troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of pneumatic and cryogenic systems Benefits • Equity – We are pleased to offer equity in the form of stock options to all regular, full-time employees. • Comprehensive benefits program including subsidized medical, dental, and vision insurance • Company-paid life and disability insurance • 401(k) plan with employer match • 4 weeks' Paid Time Off • Holidays – 10 days (including an end-of-year closure) • Paid Family/Parental Leave • On-site gym or monthly wellness stipend (depending on location) • Dog friendly offices! Who You Are Sila's Moses Lake Engineering team is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Mechanical Designer & Fabrication Specialist to contribute to our innovative projects. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in CAD design across multiple engineering disciplines, coupled with hands-on fabrication skills and a deep commitment to safety and functional design. This role requires a detail-oriented individual with excellent computer, communication, organizational, and problem-solving abilities. The successful candidate will be capable of working independently on unique designs, collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams, and potentially managing projects and resources. Responsibilities and Duties • Create detailed 2D and 3D designs and models utilizing a variety of CAD software, including the Autodesk Suite, Inventor, Plant 3D, SolidWorks. • Develop and maintain Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs). • Troubleshoot existing equipment and processes, and develop innovative solutions to address unique needs. • Apply knowledge of safety principles and regulations (including PSM) in the design and development process. • Participate in or lead safety initiatives, such as Action Committees, Behavior Based Safety programs, HAZOP analyses, and incident investigations. • Assist with mechanical repairs and customizations on equipment. • Develop project plans, budgets, and schedules for assigned tasks or projects. • Effectively communicate technical information through written reports, presentations, and visual aids. • Organize and facilitate meetings. • Potentially manage project resources and provide guidance to other team members. • Conduct field inspections and translate observations into practical designs. • Contribute to Research and Development (R&D) projects. • Develop and maintain CAD standards and work practices. Knowledge and Skill Requirements • Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Drafting and Design or a related field. • Demonstrated experience (ideally 10+ years) in advanced mechanical design and drafting, preferably within an industrial or manufacturing environment (chemical industry experience is highly valued). • Proficiency in a range of CAD software, including Autodesk suite, Inventor, Plant 3D, SolidWorks. Familiarity with Studio 3ds Max and Navisworks is a plus. • Strong understanding of mechanical principles, safety regulations, and functional design. • Hands-on experience with manual fabrication techniques and machine shop equipment. • Ability to operate mobile equipment. • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and presentation abilities. • Strong organizational and time management skills. • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical issues and develop creative solutions. • Experience with project management, budgeting, and resource scheduling is desirable. • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment. Physical Demands and Working Conditions • Pass a respirator fit test and be able to wear respiratory protection on a daily basis • Wear personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, a lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, and steel toe safety shoes • Move items up to 50 lbs with the assistance of lift equipment and carts • Move long distances (such as from building to building) and be stationary for extended periods of time • Reach low shelves or items on the floor • Enter spaces narrower than 3 feet • Climb stairs or over containment walls • Precise and repetitive handling of a range of material quantities • Operate a computer and other office equipment, such as a laptop, copier/printer, etc in a fixed location The starting base pay for this role is between $111,000 and $140,000 at the time of posting. The actual base pay depends on many factors, such as education, experience, and skills. Base pay is only one part of Sila’s competitive Total Rewards package that can include benefits, perks, equity, and bonuses.
