General Definition of Work Performs difficult technical work maintaining and repairing a variety of heavy and light-duty automotive, marine, and specialized equipment, performing computer diagnostics and fabrication methods, maintaining records, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the general direction of the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor. The ideal candidate will have a solid work ethic and excellent diagnostic skills. They will be a self-starter with the ability to multitask and accept new methods and ideas. They will have the ability to perform all phases of maintenance and repair on light duty vehicles, heavy equipment, fire apparatus, heavy busses, marine equipment, and other support vehicles. Area of emphasis will be on heavy equipment (loaders, graders, tractors, backhoes, etc.) and Fire Apparatus. ASE and EVT certification is preferred. Minimum Qualifications High School diploma or GED and considerable experience in performing skilled maintenance and repair on all phases of heavy and light vehicles and equipment; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Qualifications Possession of a valid Commercial Driver License Class A with tanker endorsement at hire. Possession of Forklift certification issued by a nationally recognized agency at hire. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification issued by the National Institute for Automotive Excellence and Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification is preferred. Must meet and maintain all training and education requirements for the position. Valid Driver's License of the appropriate class. Essential Functions The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required and are subject to change as needs and job requirements change. Performs routine maintenance, repairs, and Department of Transportation (DOT) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) safety inspections on medium/heavy-duty vehicles, construction equipment, fire department vehicles, and equipment including, but not limited to, crane, dump, man-lift, paving, sweeper, vacuum, and water trucks, fire apparatus, pumps, loaders, backhoes, etc. Maintains maintenance records of all vehicles including tracking mileage, parts, and work performed on vehicles. Researches, identifies, and orders parts and supplies needed for maintenance and repairs; shares costing for quotes on repair and replacement services; maintains associated records. Performs routine maintenance and repairs on light-duty vehicles, such as pickup trucks, SUVs, Vans, mini-busses, landscaping equipment, beach equipment, small/medium equipment, and all class-size trailers. Performs routine maintenance and repairs on marine equipment such as boats, conveyors, and pumps; completes tire inspections. Diagnose and repair electrical systems and electronic components on heavy and light-duty vehicles and equipment. Operates forklifts, vehicles, various diagnostic tools, hand tools, pneumatic tools, vehicle lifts, and specialty tools. Maintains equipment and tools; ensures placement in proper storage areas. Ensures workspace is clean and free of safety hazards. Operates and maintains motor vehicles or other work-related equipment requiring a valid driver's license. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Thorough knowledge of methods practices, materials, instruments, and tools used in vehicle and equipment maintenance; thorough knowledge of equipment safety practices; thorough knowledge of City policies and procedures; thorough knowledge of safety standards and practices in a shop environment. Skill in diagnosing and repairing problems; skill in using diagnostic equipment; skill in using and caring of various tools and equipment; skill in maintaining records and reports; skill in effectively communicating verbally and in writing; skill in troubleshooting and repairing gas and light duty diesel internal combustion engine including electrical, HVAC systems and brakes; skill in advanced diagnostic abilities to diagnose automotive computer and network systems, steering and suspension repairs, operating tools and equipment used in making repairs of gas and diesel engines and other mechanic related duties; skill in using computers and related software applications. Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical, brake, fuel and electrical defects in a wide variety of automotive and heavy duty truck equipment; ability to safely use tools, materials and equipment during vehicle and equipment maintenance; ability to read manuals and specifications and diagrams to obtain knowledge and familiarity with parts and equipment; ability to follow and effectively communicate verbal and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, contractors, supervisors, vendors, and the general public. Working Conditions This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm's length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), Will be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; safety glasses, steel toe work boots, gloves, hearing protection, etc.; work is generally in a loud noise shop environment.
