Mechanical Engineer

Mechanical Engineer Role Summary The Mechanical Engineer will play a key role in the development of an innovative new medium-duty vehicle platform designed to advance clean, efficient, and intelligent transportation. This role focuses on vehicle structural, chassis, and mechanical subsystem development, supporting the complete product lifecycle from concept through production. The ideal candidate will have strong CAD design skills, a solid understanding of vehicle manufacturing and assembly processes, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative, and startup-like environment. This position is based at ENC’s headquarters in Riverside, California, and requires close cooperation with engineering teams in China as well as support for supplier selection and management both in the U.S. and internationally. Key Responsibilities • Design and develop vehicle structures, chassis systems, and mechanical subsystems for new medium-duty vehicles. • Create and maintain detailed 3D CAD models, 2D drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs) using SolidWorks (CATIA or NX a plus). • Ensure designs meet performance, durability, and manufacturability requirements. • Collaborate cross-functionally with electrical, manufacturing, and supply chain teams to ensure system compatibility and efficiency. • Support prototype builds, mechanical testing, validation, and issue resolution. • Participate in supplier sourcing, evaluation, and management in the U.S. and abroad. • Travel regularly to China to support and coordinate with China-based engineering team, review supplier capabilities, and oversee technical alignment. • Participate in and support vehicle certification and compliance processes (e.g., FMVSS). • Lead or assist in root cause analysis and design improvement activities. Qualifications Required: • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field. • 5+ years of experience in automotive, commercial vehicle, or mobility product development (EV experience preferred). • Advanced CAD proficiency (SolidWorks, CATIA, NX). • Strong understanding of vehicle manufacturing processes, including fabrication, welding, plastics, composites, and final assembly. • Familiarity with automotive design practices, GD&T, and tolerance analysis. • Excellent communication and teamwork skills across cross-functional and cross-cultural environments. • Ability and willingness to travel internationally, including frequent travel to China. Preferred: • Experience with electric vehicle systems (battery enclosures, thermal management, or high-voltage components). • Familiarity with vehicle integration and system packaging. • Experience working with international suppliers, particularly Chinese OEMs or tier suppliers. • Prior involvement in new product development or startup environments is a plus. Primary duties typically involve leadership of the project mechanical team, coordination with other engineering disciplines, monitoring, and communication of project status, and providing mechanical engineering support for detailed design and owner’s engineer projects on both a technical and contractual level. Preferred candidates will have significant experience utility-scale power generation systems and equipment, and proven ability to plan, schedule, and lead design projects. Typical deliverables developed by this individual and/or their team include construction drawings, bid specifications, mechanical equipment sizing calculations, technical memos, bid evaluations, code reviews, feasibility studies, reports, and cost estimates. Significant experience with the design and specification of power generation systems for simple cycle, combined cycle, distributed generation, and RICE projects is preferred. Project roles will vary based on the size and type of the project, as well as the capabilities, experience, and preferred focus of the engineer. Project roles will typically consist of lead mechanical engineer and project engineering manager and may include project manager. Most tasks will be done in a collaborative manner involving engineers and designers from several other disciplines. Preferred Qualifications • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited university. • Minimum 15 years of experience in power generation design. • Gas turbine, steam turbine and/or large reciprocating engine experience or subject matter expertise. • Design experience with simple cycle and combined cycle power generation • Previous experience with an engineering power consulting or EPC firm desired. • Minimum 10 years of experience, ideally in the fossil power industry with a blend of design and owner’s engineer projects. • Have the ability to handle multiple concurrent assignments. • Excellent communication and analytical skills. • Willing to mentor less experienced engineers and EITs. • Proficient at working within an established schedule and budget • Position will include an expectation of less than 10% travel for meetings with clients and vendors as well as project site visits. , Required Qualifications • Bachelor's degree in Engineering • A minimum of 10 years of experience • Professional Engineers (PE or P.Eng) license • Extensive experience in project execution within the Power Market Sector • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office as well as standard Power Market Sector design software (examples include PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, AutoPipe, and Revit) • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture What We Believe HDR is our company.
