Summary Description: Process Engineers are responsible for working with Operations and Quality management to optimize system performance in the areas of quality, machine efficiency and cost, and new grade development. Work activities will be a mix of on- the-floor trouble-shooting and interpreting data analysis. Qualifications Key Accountabilities: • Provide high-quality process support and technical leadership to the mill’s operations group resulting in improved product quality, new product development, productivity and reduced costs. • Evaluate product improvement or cost optimization projects by conducting trials including development of trial plans and authoring trial reports • Improve product quality while implementing cost and variability reduction initiatives and improving process and product monitoring systems • Develop manufacturing specifications for new grades through pilot coater and machine evaluations • Reduce environmental impact • Provide technical support for key departments • Provide problem solving and analytical skills and leadership • Assist with machine shut downs and start up • Integrate safety leadership into daily activities • Provide on-call and weekend duty coverage within a designated rotation Personal qualities Required Experience and Education: Minimum Required Experience and Education: • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, (electrical or chemical engineering preferred). • Working knowledge of mill DCS/QCS systems and networking • Working knowledge of mill data systems, data gathering techniques and statistics Preferred Experience and Education: • Two or more years of process engineering or manufacturing experience preferred Travel: Negotiable Required skills: Minimum Required Skills: • Self-starter able to work effectively with minimal direct supervision. • Ability to work in a fast paced, dynamic work environment. • Possess ambulatory capabilities to move freely about the mill, ascend and descend ladders and stairways, and tolerate temperature extremes. Develop, support and/or manage implementation of new processes for quality initiatives. Responsible for managing lab resources, equipment and team members. Qualifications Key Accountabilities: • Provide leadership for safe work practices throughout mill systems. • Improve and optimize processes; assist production areas in evaluating changes to operation; aid operating personnel to better understand their processes and quality problems encountered; focus on higher operating rates, efficiencies and de-bottlenecking. • Manage lab resources, quality testing results, and communicate results with process engineers and paper machines. • Ensure all testing equipment properly calibrated and properly maintained. • Reduce costs; complete cost reduction projects that provide significant savings through product substitution, reduced variability, improved quality, and higher operating efficiencies. • Champion continuous quality improvement. • Identify gaps in inspection and disposition systems and co-ordinate the effort to close them. • Manage mill product stewardship needs. • Assist Production areas with troubleshooting as needed. • Manage site product quality specifications. • Assist production and technical departments with manufacturing execution system software. • Report on activities through status reports of ongoing projects, results of troubleshooting activities, etc. • Be able to work in a team-based system. • Strong technical, analytical and problem-solving skills. • Strong written and verbal communication skills along with strong team skills. • Prioritize and manage multiple projects to meet deadlines. • Thorough knowledge of processes/products/technologies across mill systems. • Work beyond normal work schedule as necessary to fulfill position responsibilities. • Provide weekly on-call and weekend duty coverage as scheduled. Personal qualities Required Experience and Education: Minimum Required Experience and Education: • BS or MS Pulp/Paper, Quality Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Chemistry. • At least 2 years’ experience in mill technical, production, product development with exposure to all mill operating areas (pulping, paper making, coating, utilities, etc.). Required skills: Minimum Required Skills: • Strong analytical problem-solving skills; a solid background in statistical analysis is a plus. • Proven experience with several leadership behaviors: Leading and Advocating Change, Drive for Results, Communication, Managerial Courage, Building and Effective Team, and Managing through Systems.
