Trains employees as needed. • Performs other duties as assigned. • Associate Degree in Diesel and Heavy Equipment Mechanics or related field. • ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification in all phases of medium-heavy truck repairs desirable. • One year experience in medium-heavy truck and off-road equipment. • Previous experience in commercial welding/fabrication and/or certification desirable. • Valid driver's license and good driving record, and CDL endorsement or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire. A combination of equivalent experience and/or education may be considered. • Considerable knowledge of standard practices, equipment, tools, hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Considerable knowledge of principles of gasoline and diesel engines, and welding techniques. Considerable knowledge of hydraulic power systems, fuel injection and chassis electrical and engine management systems. • Knowledge of oiling, lubrication and fluid systems on heavy and light equipment and vehicles operated by the department. Knowledge in Preventive Maintenance Inspections and the ability to recognize worn parts and necessary repairs. Knowledge of welding on various metals and the preparation of metals for welding. • Skill in reading and interpreting hydraulic schematics, electrical wiring diagrams, service manuals and other reference materials; diagnosing defective equipment; performing complete engine, transmission and related vehicle component overhauls; including heavy duty automatic and manual transmissions. • Ability to install, repair and maintain specialized parts, including necessary component overhauls and field repairs. Ability to operate equipment for maintenance and trouble-shooting activities. Ability to operate all Public Works equipment and electronic test equipment. Ability to proficiently utilize a computer and the required software. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
