Mechanical Engineer, Sr - Bulk Solid Handling SME

Sedron Technologies is hiring a talented Senior Mechanical Engineer- Bulk Handling SME! Preferred Location : While this position is remote, candidates residing near our Bellingham, WA or Sedro-Woolley, WA offices are strongly preferred. Founded in 2014 and headquartered in the Pacific Northwest, Sedron Technologies designs, manufactures, installs, and operates advanced water resource recovery and waste upcycling technologies. With a focus on transforming the paradigm from waste processing to resource recovery, Sedron Technologies works with municipal, agricultural, and industrial customers to process their "waste" into climate-smart commodities through environmentally and financially sustainable methods. We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer that's an expert at bulk handing equiptment to design and deliver large-scale systems that move and process bulk materials through our plants. In this role, you’ll take the lead on developing conveyors, augers, bucket elevators, rotary valves, knife gates, and related equipment—bringing innovative, durable, and efficient solutions from concept through commissioning. This is a senior-level position for an engineer who thrives on solving complex mechanical challenges, mentoring others, and ensuring the reliability of heavy-duty industrial machinery that supports Sedron’s mission of turning “waste” into climate-smart commodities. Because we design, build, commission, and operate our technologies, we are looking for individuals who can meet the following essential functions of the position: • Lead the design, development, and integration of bulk and slurry material handling systems, including conveyors, augers, bucket elevators, box chain conveyors, feeders, rotary valves/locks, knife gates, piston pumps, silos, and related transfer equipment. • Provide expertise in the selection, sizing, and design of rotary and conveying components (bearings, shafts, seals, drives, couplings, gearboxes, structural supports). • Specify and evaluate separation equipment such as fiber screens, centrifuges, and belt presses to support solids/liquid handling requirements. • Develop and manage CAD models, layouts, and fabrication drawings for custom industrial material handling and slurry-handling equipment. • Perform advanced engineering analyses, including load, torque, wear, vibration, fatigue, and bulk flow calculations to validate equipment performance. • Specify and integrate motors, gear drives, and power transmission systems for continuous-duty operations. • Collaborate with process engineers to integrate slurry and separation technologies into complete system designs, ensuring reliability and maintainability in continuous-duty applications. • Oversee prototype fabrication, vendor builds, field installation, and commissioning of material handling equipment. • Drive root cause analysis and design improvements for equipment reliability, downtime reduction, and lifecycle cost optimization. • Evaluate and qualify suppliers, vendors, and components, ensuring compliance with relevant industrial standards (ASME, CEMA, API, ANSI). • Mentor and provide technical leadership to junior engineers and designers, fostering best practices in bulk material handling design. • Maintain reliable attendance, arriving on time and ready to contribute • Perform other related duties as assigned This position has multiple levels of competency to be determined by performance, certifications, and supervisor discretion. BENEFITS • Multiple medical, dental, and vision insurance options to keep you feeling your best • 401(k) with employer matching — free money for future you • Generous paid time off and paid holidays (plus 2 floating holidays to use your way) • Disability, Life, and AD&D Insurance • FSA and HSA options with employer contributions • Tuition reimbursement — we invest in your growth • Casual work attire — no suits required (unless that’s your thing) EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering or related field required. • 10+ years of engineering experience in bulk material handling system design for industrial applications • Proven expertise in conveyors, augers, bucket elevators, rotary valves/locks, knife gates, feeders, and other bulk handling equipment. • Working knowledge of bolted joint analysis, FEA, drawing creation/GD&T, and tolerance analysis is required • Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling and drafting (NX, SolidWorks, or equivalent). • Strong knowledge of rotating equipment design principles including bearings, seals, lubrication systems, shaft alignment, and power transmission. • Proven track record of leading projects from concept through fabrication and commissioning. • Must have effective verbal, reading, and written communication skills in the English language PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field preferred. • Experience with bulk solids flow analysis, slurry hydraulics, wear mitigation, and dust/containment systems. • Field experience in installation, troubleshooting, and commissioning of industrial conveying systems. • Familiarity with CEMA, ASME, and API standards for bulk material handling equipment. • Background in mining, agriculture, fertilizer, or power generation bulk handling environments. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks • Comfortable working in various environments, including heights, confined spaces, and varying temperatures • Ability to stand, walk, and bend for extended periods of time when on site ADDITIONAL INFORMATION • Compensation for this role is between $130,000- $175,000 annually • This role may qualify for a discretionary bonus, recognizing outstanding contributions to team and company success • This role requires approximately 20% travel to support Sedron facilities • In compliance with state and local pay transparency laws, the expected compensation for this role is shared above. The range provided is Sedron’s estimate of the base compensation for this role and the final offer will be based on job-related and non-discriminatory factors such as experience, skills, and geographic location. Compensation may be adjusted within this range to reflect regional cost-of-living differences in states where Sedron is hiring. Must be a US Citizen or legal permanent resident for this position.
