Mechanic Level II

General Description Under the supervision of the Fleet Supervisor, the Mechanic performs maintenance and emergency repairs on District vehicles and other motorized equipment. This position’s shift is 4:00 am – 12:30 pm Monday – Friday. Qualifications include: Valid WA State driver’s license with Class A CDL endorsement; HS graduate or equivalent; three (3) years experience, or three (3) years combination of training/experience, in diversified auto and truck maintenance; thorough knowledge of all aspects of auto maintenance, including light, medium and heavy equipment used in electrical construction. The ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and the ability to respond to overtime requests. Successful applicant will be required to pass a physical capacities assessment. Ability to use acetylene torch, as well as stick and mig welding techniques, is preferred. Status: Full-time, Non-exempt, Union Work Week/Shift: Monday – Friday, 4:00 am – 12:30 pm Supervisor: Fleet Supervisor First Review Date: 5:00 pm on Monday, April 7, 2025 Hourly Wage Rate: Effective April 1, 2025 Level II $48.20 Level I $50.72 Vehicle Maintenance and Repair • Perform repairs, preventative maintenance, and servicing necessary to maintain the District's fleet and motorized equipment. • Perform manufacturer's recommended inspections and/or routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment. • Perform trouble shooting as required. • Maintain time, material, and work order records. • Participate in inventory activities. Safety • Correctly and safely operate lifting devices in the shop. • Recognize potential for and actual safety problems involving District facilities and equipment. Report to the proper authority at the earliest opportunity. • Ensure all vehicles carry all necessary safety equipment and documentation. • Observe all motor vehicle laws and assure the safe operation of District vehicles. Attend District sponsored Defensive Driving programs. • Attend and participate in various safety meetings and training programs. • Keep garage area free of obstacles, spills, and other safety hazards. Miscellaneous Duties • Participate in the training of other Fleet employees, such as Garage Helpers, Mechanic Trainees, and newly hired Mechanics. • Participate in District sponsored training. • Transport District vehicles as needed, including loading, securing, and towing equipment on trailers. • Maintain a clean and orderly work place and ensure proper operation and maintenance of shop repair tools and equipment. • Assist in the proper disposal of hazardous wastes generated by vehicle maintenance activities. • Fuel vehicles as required. • May be required to work overtime. • Perform other related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of auto maintenance, including heavy equipment and standard equipment used in electrical construction. • Thorough knowledge of hydraulics and pneumatics. • Ability to read and use schematics, technical manuals, instruction books, prints, sketches, manufacturer's data, and blue prints. • Knowledge of safety precautions established for garage operations and Washington State Workers Safety Rules and Regulations. • Ability to safely operate various equipment and machinery. • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. • Demonstrated ability to communicate and manage time effectively, and pay attention to detail. • Demonstrated ability to work with little or no supervision. • Demonstrated ability to be punctual and dependable in attendance. • Demonstrated ability to problem solve. • Knowledge of fundamental mathematics. • Ability to write legibly; maintain time and material records, files; and complete forms. • Ability to operate a personal computer, utilizing a variety of software applications. • Demonstrated ability to follow and understand oral and written instructions. Education and Experience • High school diploma or equivalent. Level II: • Must have three (3) years’ experience or three (3) years combination of training/experience in diversified auto and truck maintenance; or at least one (1) year experience as a Mechanic Trainee, Level I, or equivalent. Level I: • Must have four (4) years’ experience or four (4) years combination of training/experience in diversified auto and truck maintenance; or have at least one (1) year experience as a Mechanic, Level II, or equivalent. Advancement to Level I is dependent on working knowledge of all aspects of the District’s fleet and motorized equipment. Preferred Qualifications • Ability to use diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot and repair various vehicles and equipment. • Ability to weld and fabricate using a variety of welding and cutting machines, equipment, and techniques. • Ability to maintain, test, diagnose, and repair hydraulic systems, automotive HVAC systems, and automotive and equipment electrical systems. • Experience maintaining utility booms, including performing dielectric testing. Other Requirements • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's license and a Commercial Driver's License, Class A. Must qualify for the District's auto liability insurance. • Must possess a valid First Aid/CPR card. Individual will be allowed up to six (6) months to comply with this requirement. • Must have a valid Washington State Flagging and Traffic Control card. Individual will be allowed up to six (6) months to comply with this requirement. • Must be certified to operate a forklift. Individual will be allowed thirty (30) days to receive certification. • Able to respond to overtime. WORKING CONDITIONS • Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor setting, in all weather conditions, including temperature extremes; and on various types of terrain. • Individual may be exposed to conditions and hazards from fuel, transmission fluid, oil products, and other hazardous materials normally associated with garage shops. • Individual may be exposed to hazards associated with construction job sites. • Individual may work in limited and cramped spaces, lifting and handling tools, parts, etc. PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES • Individual must be able to regularly lift and carry, push, pull, and hoist seventy (70) pounds. • Work is performed in awkward positions. • Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate a motor vehicle, machinery, and various equipment. • Transporting vehicles often requires long periods of driving. • Shop work requires working for long periods of time on cement floors. • Applicants must submit all required information in order to be considered.* Application Requirements To apply, qualified candidates must submit: 1.
