Description Under the direction of the assigned manager, lead, oversee and participate in the work of staff responsible for performing a variety of skilled carpentry and general construction duties supporting the maintenance, repair and remodeling of District buildings and facilities; and perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This class is distinguished from Maintenance Worker I and II by the level of responsibility assumed and the complexity of duties assigned. Employees perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to classes within this series, including exercising functional and technical oversight over lower-level staff. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned areas of responsibility. Responsibilities and Duties ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • Lead, plan, train and review the work of staff responsible for performing a variety of skilled carpentry and general construction duties supporting the maintenance, repair and remodeling of District buildings and facilities. • Plan, direct and participate in performing rough and finished carpentry work from beginning to end including framing of new construction and the maintenance and repair of existing buildings and facilities. • Read and follow blueprints, shop drawings and sketches supporting the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities; obtain quotes for and purchase materials in compliance with college purchasing procedures. • Repair all wood dry rot, doors and windows throughout the campus; install and replace window frames and broken windows; repair or construct complete window frames. • Construct small buildings; build partitions, counters, doors, scaffolds and forms; construct, assemble, install and repair cabinets, bookcases, chairs, desks and tables. • Perform rough framing duties; cut, trim, hang and finish doors, sliding doors, enclosures and overhangs; construct cement forms; pour, finish and repair interior furnishings. • Perform a variety of preventive maintenance functions; inspect and repair rotten and decayed floorboards and roofs. • Supervise the use, care and operation of a variety of carpentry equipment and tools including, but not limited to, saws, routers, drills, sanders, planers, drill presses and various hand tools. • Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques and compliance with applicable standards and specifications. • Attend and participate in various project meetings; update project status and provide information on projected completion. • Respond to and resolve various emergency and routine calls for service. • Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge of: • Principles, procedures and terminology used in the carpentry trade. • Principles of lead supervision and training. • Tools and materials used in custom carpentry work. • Finish carpentry and cabinet making techniques. • Characteristics of various types of wood. • Operational characteristics of a variety of carpentry and hand tools. • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices. • Pertinent Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations. Ability to: • Lead, organize and review the work of staff. • Independently perform the most difficult skilled carpentry tasks. • Interpret, explain and enforce department policies and procedures. • Correctly use and apply a variety of carpentry skills. • Read and interpret plans and blueprints. • Repair and/or replace damaged windows, woodwork and related items. • Measure and cut materials precisely. • Coordinate the completion of assigned projects with other skilled tradesmen. • Operate all carpentry equipment and tools effectively and safely. • Understand and follow oral and written instructions. • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees and others encountered in the course of work. • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students and staff as demonstrated by skills and abilities in cultural responsiveness and cultural humility. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be: Education: High school diploma or equivalent supplemented by advanced specialized training in finished carpentry or cabinet making; journeyman certification. Experience: Three years’ experience journey level finish carpentry. OTHER CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, OR SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: A valid Class "C" California Driver's License is required by the time of appointment.
