Captain of the Carpentry Team

Build your Career with Heirloom Builders THE OPPORTUNITY: We are hiring a Principal Carpenter As a design-forward firm, we have developed a very smooth and structured process that we walk every home remodel or new build through. This process allows us to enter into construction with just about every conceivable detail figured out, from construction details to grout colors. As great as that is though, why does that matter? Well, because of you. To us, a well built project is nothing more than a pile of sticks and bricks apart from the people we build for and with. So by building our process around having complete information as well as the involvement of Carpenters during the design phase, the intent is that it frees you up to do what you do best – focus on crafting thoughtful things. Because you see, we’re the kind of people who would rather study building techniques than watch Netflix, and wear sawdust like it’s going out of style. To us toolbelts are fashionable, our techniques can always be honed, and we like biscuits with our miters more than with gravy - though we do like biscuits and gravy.... Now does that mean that everything you'll build here will on the surface appear to be on the cutting edge - no. But we know as craftsmen that there is just as much to be appreciated and innovated in precutting a roof and making everything plane out perfectly as there is in building a custom piece of furniture. There's also as much to be appreciated in well planned work and a well run team as there is in beautiful carpentry. So, we're looking for a Principal Carpenter. What's a Principal Carpenter? This person will be the captain of our carpentry team. Responsible for planning our self performed work, leading the team, as well as putting bags on and making the magic happen, the Principal Carpenter is the manager of our carpentry division and in house labor. As the team grown, it grows under the leadership, example, and tutelage of the Principal Carpenter. To be clear, this is distinct from a Project Manager. Our Project Manager handles our projects as a whole, client interactions, project budgets, subcontractors, etc. The Principal Carpenter works closely with the Project Manager as the representative of our self performed work. The Project Manager reports on overall project performance, the Principal Carpenter reports on self performed work performance. YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES: -"Own" our carpentry/self performed division -Lead and develop and grow a team of in house craftsmen -Lead the planning/scheduling of all self performed work -Hold staff under your supervision accountable -Provide praise, critique and coaching for staff under your supervision -Practice what you preach, be an example for the rest of the team to emulate. -Provide regular structured reporting on department performance -Accountable for division performance YOUR CAPABILITIES: Required: - Desire to take the next step in your CAREER in this industry; if you're "just looking for work" this is not your place - Desire to take ownership and responsibility of a team and department. - Have "been around the block" a few times, maybe you even walk with a limp and have a few grey hairs (if there's even any left) - Expertise in various carpentry skills from form to finish - Ability to read and interpret plans and construction details - Willing to take feedback and critique - Desire to always be learning and improving - Embody a people focused leadership approach - Enjoy developing other people - Be a team player; construction is a team sport and we put people before projects - Have valid drivers license and clean driving history -Computer skills sufficient for takeoffs, basic spreadsheets, and department reporting. PREFERRED: - Management experience - Mindset of an owner who can see the goal and make decisions in the best interest of the company without direction - perhaps you even are or have been self employed - Experience in one or more additional trades WHAT WE OFFER: - Paid sick leave - Medical insurance (tentative) - Paid vacation - Company tuck - 401K - The commitment of our family-owned company to your well being and that of your family - Pay commensurate with experience with additional performance based compensation. - Monday-Thursday, 4x10 work schedule Job Type: Full-time Pay: $40.00 - $55.00 per hour Expected hours: 40 per week Benefits: • 401(k) • 401(k) matching • Health insurance • Paid time off • Profit sharing • Tools provided Schedule: • 10 hour shift Work Location: In person
