Mechanical Design and Analysis Engineer

JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: We are searching for a Research and Development Engineer to join our Advanced Design & Analysis Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL’s purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC). This role will involve designing, analyzing, and testing structures and systems, with a particular emphasis on multi-material assemblies, including fiber-reinforced polymer composite structures. ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply. You will: • Perform advanced finite element analysis (FEA) modeling, structural analysis, and results interpretation • Develop detailed mechanical designs and assemblies using mechanical CAD software • Conduct laboratory testing to validate analytical models and determine material properties • Flexibly adapt across a variety of technical tasks, including CAD modeling, FEA, scripting in MATLAB/Python, and supporting experimental testing • Collaborate closely with senior engineers, receiving mentorship in CAD modeling, advanced FEA methods, and testing Minimally requires a Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or a science discipline and 2 years' related experience. Required skills/experience areas include: • Finite element analysis (FEA) modeling and structural analysis • CAD software, such as SolidWorks or NX • Programming skills (MATLAB/Python) • Ability to quickly adapt to diverse engineering tasks and changing project priorities • Demonstrated collaboration within a multidisciplinary team Preferred skills/experience areas include: • Experience with Abaqus or similar FEA software • Interest or experience with composite materials or multi-material assemblies • Previous experience with mechanical testing methods and laboratory experiments Interested candidates should submit a resume to be considered for this position. You will: • Provide input to and assist with preliminary designs and program path plans (CAD/CAM support) • Perform fabrication/machining/characterization/mechanical testing of materials in support of projects • Collaborate with senior engineers and faculty members to support various projects • Perform various activities regarding the operation and maintenance of metal AM systems • Participate in documenting process parameters • Complete established documentation for task procedures and process evaluation, as needed • Maintain/resupply tools and consumables • Ensure proper disposal of lab waste and assist with required paperwork/reporting Required skills/experience areas include: • Computer Aided Design (CAD) • CNC/Manual Machining • Experience interpreting and applying geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) • General equipment maintenance and routine preventative maintenance • Machine shop setting/ lab safety practices • Prior experience working alongside a diverse group of people from a variety of cultures and backgrounds • Success in a technical environment, where various forms of communication and organizational skills were crucial to be effective • Demonstrated ability to work through problems, using proper steps to define and formulate ideas to reach a solution Preferred skills/experience areas include: • AM exposure • Metallurgical sample preparation and characterization • Exposure to operation of industrial robots • Exposure to laser and/or arc welding • Ability to obtain and hold a government security clearance • Military or DoD background Your working location fully on-site, located in State College, PA.
