Ocean/ Mechanical Engineer - Entry to Mid-Level

Job Description Makai Ocean Engineering is looking for an exceptional engineer to fill an available position in the Marine Services group out of Ventura, California. The Marine Services group primarily provides services to the U.S. Government and U.S. Government contractors that includes at-sea testing, marine construction, submarine cable installations, prototype systems development and specialty materials procurement. Employees will get to work on state-of-the-art and challenging, dynamic, ocean engineering problems as part of a collaborative, innovative, and experienced team. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical and design skills; with responsibility for hydrodynamic modeling, mechanical analysis and design using CAD and FEA software, and at-sea and field operations. The position provides the unique and rewarding opportunity to be hands-on and directly involved in projects from design through to installation and construction. This is a permanent, full-time position in Ventura, California, with some at-sea work and travel throughout the year. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Makai will consider hybrid-remote work arrangements but expects the position to be based several days per week in the Ventura office and a willingness to support at-sea and field operations. Requirements: • Possession of U.S. citizenship is required. • Possession of B.S. degree in mechanical, aerospace, or similar engineering field is required. • GPA > 3.5 • At least 3 years of relevant professional experience. • Practical experience, recreationally or professionally, with the ocean or marine environment. • Willingness to travel and work at-sea as needed. • Willingness to obtain and ability to maintain necessary U.S. Gov’t security clearances – to be completed after hiring. Desirable: Preference will be given to applicants with: • High GPAs when applying with limited prior work experience. • Demonstrable performance when applying with prior work experience. • M.S. or higher education degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Ocean Engineering, or similar. • P.E. license or willingness to obtain the P.E. license. • Professional experience with at-sea marine operations. • Ability to think logically and communicate and present ideas clearly and concisely. • High level of technical curiosity and strong engineering fundamentals. Maintenance Engineer

THE AGENCY The General Services Agency (GSA) is comprised of Fleet Services, Facilities, Procurement, Special Services, Parks, Security, and Business Support and is responsible for a broad spectrum of services to all the County departments and agencies. It requires a very diverse workforce to accomplish the GSA mission of contributing to the quality of life in Ventura County by partnering with their customers to provide expertise and cost-effective service delivery, and foster the preservation of natural resources. THE POSITION Under general supervision, performs maintenance, repair, and/or replacement of mechanical and electrical systems within large public buildings or areas, including detention facilities. May be required to give technical instruction to a crew on a specific job assignment. Incumbents work rotating shifts, including weekends. The successful candidate will be skilled in the repair of electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and other building systems/equipment in commercial, and or multi-building campus type settings. Additionally, the candidate will have excellent customer service skills and the ability to understand, apply, and adhere to established policies and procedures. Finally, the ideal candidate will be self-motivated and have the proven ability to communicate and work effectively with others as a team player, as well as skilled in the use of computer based maintenance record keeping systems. Some positions may be eligible for educational incentive. This incentive may be 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% for incumbents in eligible positions based on completion of an Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree that is not required for the classification.Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: • Inspects, repairs and/or replaces plumbing connections, seals, water and sewer lines, valves, lavatory and shower fixtures, hot water heaters, water softeners, drinking fountains, and centrifugal pumps. • Examines, replaces, and/or repairs switches, lights, ballasts, circuit breakers, panel boxes, transformers, relays, electrical doors, and electrical controls. • Operates various electrical metering devices, power snakes, threading machines, power tools, and other mechanical equipment. • Overhauls and repairs low pressure boilers, heat exchangers, refrigeration and ventilation systems, compressors, motors, fans, gauges, meters, electro-mechanical and gear operated cell doors. • Maintains records on equipment, services, and work hours expended using computer based record keeping systems. • Performs minor welding, painting and carpentry work. • Receives and investigates day or night emergency calls. • Repairs and installs steam kettles, ranges, ovens, fryers, refrigerators, freezing units, garbage disposals, dish washers, ice machines, food carts, washers, dryers, ironers, and other kitchen and laundry equipment. • Inspects elevators and related safety equipment. • Performs other related duties as required. Maintenance Engineer is represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE), Local 501 and is eligible for overtime compensation.These are entrance requirements to the exam process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list. EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE Any combination of training and experience in the maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical equipment and systems which has led to the acquisition of the required knowledge, skills and abilities. The required knowledge, skills, and abilities can also be obtained by possessing a minimum of three (3) years of increasingly responsible building maintenance experience which includes the repair of minor electrical and mechanical systems and equipment. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Must possess a California driver license. Must undergo in-depth Sheriff and Probation Department Background investigations and receive clearances from both departments prior to hiring. Maintaining such clearances is a condition of employment. Must have experience in maintenance and repair in large commercial, industrial, and/or campus type settings. Must also be able to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, twist, and lift heavy objects. Applicants must indicate on their application that they are willing to work ALL shifts in ALL areas of the County, including on-call shifts. Maintenance Engineers must be available to work a rotating schedule, including weekends. OTHER REQUIREMENTS This position may be subject to State Health Officer Orders regarding vaccine verification and/or testing. These requirements are a condition of employment. HIGHLY DESIRED • Experience with boilers, pumps and chillers. • Highly skilled in the repair of all types of building systems/equipment in commercial. and or multi-building campus type settings. • Excellent customer service skills • Ability to understand, apply, and adhere to established policies and procedures • Self-motived as well as the ability to work effectively with others. • Skilled in the use of computer based maintenance record keeping systems. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Working knowledge of: • tools and materials used in general maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical equipment; • methods used in maintenance and minor repair of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems and equipment; • basic mathematics; • current office computer systems, software and computer-based maintenance record keeping systems; • fundamentals of electricity and plumbing; • mechanical principles; • codes relevant to the installation and operation of electrical and/or mechanical equipment; • occupational hazards and safety precautions. Working skills to: • properly use and maintain power and hand tools; • diagnose the cause of electrical, mechanical or system failures; • work independently with minimum instruction; • interpret blueprints and sketches. Working ability to: • perform a variety of building maintenance and limited repair work in the electrical and mechanical trades; • use standard hand and power tools; • follow oral and written instructions. DESIGN ENGINEER (MECHANICAL or PROCESS) JOB SUMMARY As part of a project team, and under the direction of a Project Manager, the Design Engineer performs engineering calculations and analyses and prepares plans, specifications, and estimates in connection with the design, construction, and operation of a variety of engineering projects. This may also include feasibility studies, research projects, and design projects. DESIGN ENGINEER (MECHANICAL or PROCESS) JOB DUTIES • Conducts fluid hydraulic calculations to generate process data for instrumentation and equipment (pumps, compressors and turbines, steam generators, etc.) sizing and specification. • Develops PID's, PFD's, cause and effect charts, and process descriptions. • Works with Principal Engineers to complete any simulated heat and material balances. • Designs and prepares plans, specifications, and estimates for a variety of mechanical engineering projects. • Assists project manager with project management including proposals, scheduling, budgeting, and overall client satisfaction. Limited interaction with clients under the direction of Project Manager. • Coordinates with representatives of agencies, utility companies, vendors, material suppliers, and contractors to obtain information and guidance and make appropriate process and equipment selection. • Participates in project reviews (PIDs, HAZOP, 3D models) as part of design follow-up support. • Manages work within deadlines and budgets set by the Project Manager. • Updates the Project Manager on progress of work and informs them of problems and questions. • Travels to gather field data for designs and (or) supports construction, start-up, and commissioning activities at client facilities (typically within California). • Supports development of departmental procedures, workflows, design checklists, and other company standards. Requirements • A Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited college. Chemical or Mechanical focus strongly preferred. • Successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam highly desirable. Engineer in Training (EIT) professional designation, a plus. • 0-3 years work experience in engineering. Specific experience in one or more of the following fields strongly preferred: oil & gas processing facilities; refineries; power generation; pipelines; water treatment; utility systems; fabrication; and process industries. • Familiar with applicable industry standard design codes (ASME, ANSI, API, etc.), a plus. • Knowledge of AutoCAD, 3D piping modeling, AVEVA Engineering, or Microsoft 365 is a plus. • Proven ability to work effectively with peers, superiors, clients, and others in a dynamic and demanding work environment. • Good interpersonal skills and fluent in written and spoken English.
