Mechanical Engineer Senior/Energy Manager

Title: Mechanical Engineer Senior/Energy Manager Application Review Date: 05/12/2025 Work Location: Radford City - Main Campus Job Description The Mechanical Engineer Senior/Energy Manager is responsible for managing and optimizing energy usage on campus. The main goal is to optimize energy utilization, increase energy efficiency, and lower energy costs. The energy manager will conduct energy audits, identify areas of inefficiency, develop and implement energy-saving initiatives, monitor energy usage and costs, assist with negotiating energy contracts, and educate staff on energy conservation and efficiency practices. Required Qualifications Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of mechanical engineering. Considerable skills in developing and preparing contract documents. Thorough knowledge of communication protocols. Knowledge of Windows operating systems. Ability to test, evaluate, implement, and troubleshoot networking hardware and software malfunctions in a complex, campus-wide telecommunications network. Extensive knowledge of HVAC systems, electrical, pneumatic, and digital controls. Highly familiar with Excel. A combination of knowledge, skills, and abilities, including education, certifications, and/or experience with commercial-scale mechanical systems and Building Automation software, controlling and communication with field equipment and devices. Formal education in Instrumentation, Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Experience with control strategies for a campus/plant of significant scale (500,000 points monitored or greater). Valid driver's license. Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of LEED and other sustainability tracking systems. Ability to use diagnostic tools to analyze, identify, and resolve telecommunications and control problems. Extensive knowledge of Johnson Controls ADX (extended application and data server), Lutron Lighting Control System and Automated Logic Corporation (WebCtrl software) for energy saving strategies. Demonstrated experience in the development of presentations and other report writing tools. Knowledge of utility-grade power generation from non-utility sources. Mechanical Engineer

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS: • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or in a related field such as mechanical engineering technology required. • Professional licensure, such as PE (Professional Engineer) preferred. • Four or more years of experience in design and production teams. • Background knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) required. • Six Sigma Green Belt certification required OR the ability to obtain within one year of employment and maintain certification and demonstrate proficiency in that capacity. • Working knowledge of core engineering concepts, including mechanics and materials science. • Working knowledge of analysis tools, such as Ansys and Pro/Mechanical. • Proven success in product development and the entirety of a product lifecycle. • Proficient with computer-aided systems, such as AutoCAD, Solidworks, MATLAB CAM, CAE, etc. • Demonstrated experience in improving manufacturing equipment performance. • Exhibit proficiency in problem solving. • Able to work with multiple departments (Quality, Production, Safety) and assess and offer insight on priorities with direct report and leadership. • Must possess a valid driver’s license. • Must be able to receive clearance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE). • Must have machine design experience. • Must have the ability to make judgments based on factual data, work with minimal supervision and manage multiple projects and tasks. • Background knowledge of International Organization for Standardization (ISO), preferred. • Background in basic Excel and Word. • Must be capable of reading and understanding technical drawings including Department of Defense (DoD) drawings. • Must be able to read at Level 4 on the Graham-Field Eye Test Card (Jaeger Eye Test). • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language. • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills. • Must be courteous, tactful, and objective while working to ensure that quality and service objective are maintained throughout the organization. • Must be able to work well with others and motivate employees. • Must be able to work well under the pressure of ensuring that requirements and specifications are met in an ever-changing environment. JOB DUTIES: • Work on projects to sustain a product, involving replacement or redesign of obsolete components, product improvement features, cost reductions, manufacturing support, and field complaints. • Prepare assembly or product layout and detailed drawings and participate in building of prototype product or system. • Participate in Process Engineering to identify inefficiencies throughout the plant and contribute towards a solution. • Provide tolerance analyses, apply GD&T, develop reliability testing procedures, and generate design verification reports. • Design methods for testing product capabilities and troubleshooting mechanical or structural flaws. • Ensure that design testing, implementation, and maintenance processes are executed according to company quality standards. • Communicate technical requirements to vendors as needed to support purchasing documents. • Participate in the machine shop with operation of lathes, mills, drills etc. to prototype and prove out concept. • Participate in regularly scheduled department meetings to report on project status, prepare and give design presentations. • Analyze mechanical problems and produce innovative solutions using multiple fabrication and material methods including but not limited to machined parts, and sheet metal. • Oversee product development from design to implementation, monitoring status of all assignments and reporting to senior managers on progress. • Evaluate mechanical designs for potential flaws and offer modifications to eliminate them. • Comply with all national and local regulations and maintain organizational values and standards. • Identify, design, and implement equipment improvements on existing equipment. • Integrate equipment into production and participate in training. • Lead/support the development and implementation of equipment and process innovations that will improve productivity and capabilities. • Must be committed to ISO and the company's Quality Management System using process approach and risk-based thinking methodologies. • Participate in Root Cause Analysis and Corrective Action efforts. • Participate and lead as needed in Continuous Improvement initiatives. • Participate in on-going training and education as directed by the Facility Maintenance Manager. • Obey all company work and safety rules. • Perform all other duties as directed by the Facility Maintenance Manager. Manufacturing Engineer

SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS: The Manufacturing Engineer is a key member of the Product Development Team that has responsibility for development and implementation of production cells which meet quality, cost and delivery objectives that are within budget and on time to project schedules. The Product Development Team works in a collaborative team environment to advance the policy deployed initiative to revitalize the global Kollmorgen product portfolio. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Along with those identified below, other duties may be assigned. • Specifies and implements manufacturing processes to meet quality, delivery and cost targets • Uses DBS tools and lean concepts in development of manufacturing processes and new product development • Works with internal and/or external personnel on the specification, design, build and qualification of capital equipment, gauging and tooling • Prepares budgets and estimates for capital equipment, gauging, tooling and product cost. • Leads or participates in prototyping efforts for development project • Creates tooling, fixture and machine designs and drawings using CAD software • Completes plant and/or cell level layouts • Provides technical input to development teams in the areas of design for manufacturability and manufacturing process development • Achieves budgets and project milestones for development projects • Leads or participates with a cross functional team to create PFMEA and DFMEA documentation • Creates standard work documentation for manufacturing cells • Creates manufacturing work instructions and provides operator training and certification • Executes development process so that quality, cost, and delivery targets are met • Manages Capital Equipment expenditures for development projects • Actively monitors new manufacturing technology for potential use in motor manufacturing KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES NECESSARY: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
