Automation Engineer

Jasper, IN Onsite/Permanent The Automation Engineer reports to the Engineering Team Leader. The Automation Engineer will lead the development, implementation, and support of new and existing automation projects throughout the Jasper plant. This will include the selection, specification and implementation of automated equipment and work cells. The Automation Engineer will work directly with internal and external customer contacts to ensure that new projects meet all product and quality requirements. Quick Summary • Reviews customer documentation and determines process/flow and equipment/tooling requirements. • Supports KEJ Manufacturing Engineers in evaluating the requirements for automated assembly including tooling, fixtures, and equipment required to support product schedule and cost goals, etc.) • Leads the conceptualization, development, implementation and validation of new custom automation cells and equipment. • Develops action plans and statement of work documents to guide our equipment/automation suppliers in delivering equipment solutions that meet all KEJ and customer requirements. • Reviews and improves production processes and methods to continuously reduce product cost, improve ergonomics, improve quality and reduce labor. • Ensures all ISO and QS procedures are satisfied. • Provides technical leadership to other KEJ teams and production floor. • Ownership of equipment characterization, validation and qualification activities • Ensures the effective use of material, equipment and personnel in producing quality products at minimum costs and support the development of quotations in response to our customer’s RFQs. Basic Background Requirements • B.S. degree in Industrial, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent education and/or experience • Will evaluate individuals with 2-year technical degree with 3-5 years hands on experience in related industry. • Working knowledge of Allen Bradley PLC’s, Cognex Vision systems, and Fanuc Robots are all desired. • Project Management/Leadership skills • Lean 6 Sigma approach (Green Belt level) • Strong Computer Skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Minitab, SolidWorks) • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes and equipment (SMT, Through-hole, box-build, simulation, packaging) preferred. • Ability to read and understand complex specifications • Strong mechanical and electronics knowledge • Strong problem-solving techniques and processes • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) • Certification KEJ IPC 610/J-STD-001 Certification, or the ability to obtain certification • Proven Process Improvement Experience • Learn KEJ systems and controls by reviewing existing applicable processes, SOPs, quality systems, and work instructions by the end of the third month. • Complete On the job training form including traceability system introduction, PAIs, ECO/Deviation process, • Continual Improvements, and so forth. Will be completed by the end of month three. • Understand and apply the processes applicable to Automation Engineer role. • Assess current state production methods and equipment. Determine course of action to improve manufacturing processes and tools that are critical to the mission. • Implement Lean and ergonomic manufacturing lines. • Provide monthly report out of accomplishments. • Provide strategic planning for manufacturing cell processes and capabilities. • Lead the development of custom automation projects throughout the plant. • Actively seek out automation opportunities.
