Lead Mechanical Engineer

Lead Mechanical Engineer As the Lead Mechanical Engineer, you will be a key member of our engineering team, responsible for the design, analysis, and validation of our advanced MELD additive manufacturing systems. You will play a critical role in the product lifecycle, from initial concept through production, with a strong focus on defining and controlling the technical documentation that makes it all possible. This role requires exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of configuration management processes. You will lead the mechanical design efforts for new machine development and continuous improvement projects, ensuring our products are robust, scalable, and fully documented. Key Responsibilities • Design & Development: Lead the mechanical design of new MELD machines and sub-systems, from concept to production. This includes developing detailed mechanical drawings, specifications, and Bills of Materials (BOMs). • BOM Management: Take ownership of the Bill of Materials (BOM) for MELD machines and sub-systems. This includes creating, maintaining, and auditing accurate BOMs to ensure alignment between engineering designs, procurement, and manufacturing. You will be responsible for structuring the BOMs to optimize for manufacturing and supply chain efficiency. • Change Order Management: Lead the Engineering Change Request (ECR) and Engineering Change Order (ECO)processes. You will review, analyze, and approve all mechanical design changes, ensuring they are properly documented, tracked, and implemented with minimal disruption to production. You will work closely with all stakeholders to assess the impact of changes on cost, schedule, and performance. • Specification Creation: Develop and maintain comprehensive engineering specifications for MELD machines, sub-systems, and key components. This includes writing detailed technical requirements, performance criteria, and acceptance test procedures that ensure products meet internal quality standards and customer requirements. • Engineering Analysis: Conduct advanced engineering analysis, to validate design concepts for structural integrity, thermal performance, and vibration. Utilize simulation tools to optimize designs for performance and cost. • Team Leadership: Mentor and guide engineering staff and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of electrical, software, and manufacturing engineers to ensure seamless integration of all machine components. • Prototyping & Testing: Support the prototyping, testing, and validation of mechanical designs. Develop and execute test plans to verify performance against design requirements and identify areas for improvement. • Process & Quality Improvement: Drive continuous improvement initiatives for existing products, addressing customer feedback and manufacturing challenges. Implement design for manufacturability and assembly (DFM/DFA) principles. • Documentation: Maintain comprehensive engineering documentation, including design files, analysis reports, change requests (ECRs), and technical specifications. • Supplier & Vendor Collaboration: Work closely with suppliers and vendors to specify, source, and validate mechanical components and sub-systems. Required: • Experience: • 5+ years of experience in mechanical design and product development, with a proven track record of bringing complex machinery to market. Experience with large-scale industrial equipment, CNC machines, rotating equipment, or additive manufacturing systems is highly preferred. • Technical Skills • Expert-level proficiency in SolidWorks or other major CAD software. • Demonstrated experience in creating and managing complex Bills of Materials (BOMs) and leading Engineering Change Order (ECO) processes. • Deep understanding of configuration management principles and best practices. • Proficiency in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) and ability to create detailed engineering drawings to ANSI standards. • Experience with electro-mechanical systems, fluid power (hydraulics/pneumatics), and motion control. • Knowledge of various manufacturing processes (machining, fabrication, casting) and material properties. • Leadership and Communication • Proven ability to lead technical projects and mentor other engineers. • Excellent problem-solving skills and a methodical approach to design challenges. • Strong written and verbal communication skills for collaborating with internal teams and external partners. • A proactive, hands-on mindset with a passion for building and improving physical products. Education: • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
