Job Description Summary Overall administration of the campus electrical system, including high and low voltage. Ensure system compliance with NEC and other pertinent code requirements to provide a safe and dependable electrical system for the University. Work with in-house personnel and outside consultants as necessary to coordinate projects, changes, and expansion of the system. Design and manage small electrical projects or coordinate with outside consultants for larger projects to properly modify the existing system as required. Advise and make recommendations to the AVP Facilities Management, the Director of Planning & Construction, the Director of Energy Management, and other members of the University personnel on all aspects of electrical engineering, electrical construction, life safety, and code compliance in pursuit of University objectives. Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned) • Administer the campus electrical power distribution system, both high voltage & medium voltage around the campus and low voltage inside the buildings. • Verify compliance with system safety requirements per NEC and MIOSHA; work with outside consultants as necessary to determine requirements. • Coordinate changes to the overall campus electrical system as necessary due to various construction and/or renovation projects. • Coordinate changes to various building electrical systems as necessary due to various construction and/or renovation projects. • Work with the Director of Planning & Construction Services, t the Director of Energy Management, the Director of Sustainability, and others on campus to develop and implement long-term plans to make our campus electrical system more sustainable and efficient to meet adopted University sustainability goals. • Administer electrical design contracts, supervise the activities of outside electrical engineers, testing service contractors and any other special services contractors required to successfully complete University projects. • Provide on-site project supervision and inspection and coordinate quality control inspections of campus construction projects. • Observe, record and report on the construction activity for the University and the State. • Prepare punch lists for corrections prior to acceptance by the University of building projects or portions thereof. • Monitor project costs, progress payments, and change orders; prepare monthly comparisons of actual costs vs. budget for the University and State. • Act as liaison with contractors, architects, engineers, and regulatory agencies in resolving electrical design and field construction conflicts. • Estimate costs, budget, and scheduling impacts of project developments, quality issues, errors, omissions, and required or desired filed changes; make recommendations to the Director regarding optimal resolution. • Represent the University at progress meetings and on-site inspections by architects, engineers, and regulatory agencies. • Maintain complete and current project files including correspondence, bulletins, shop drawings, requests for information, unresolved issues, contractor staffing and as-built drawings. • Assist in the review of electrical construction documents prepared by outside services and/or University personnel. • Assist peer engineers and others within the Facilities organization with the design and management of the electrical engineering aspects of their projects as required. • Assist the University community in the preparation of construction programs, cost estimates, budgets, surveys, reports and specifications. • Manage planning, engineering, scheduling, and construction of various projects as assigned in the capacity of project manager. • Assist the Director of Planning & Construction in conducting the general activities of the unit. • Develop a long-term familiarity and expertise with the campus electrical system, and with the long term needs of the building and campus users. • Work with Facilities Operations to develop campus standards for electrical construction, project practices, and equipment requirements for the Design & Construction Standards of the campus. • Provide electrical engineering support for the campus substation, main switchgear and controls, and the primary campus generators. • Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work. • Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements) ? Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering ? Licensed PE in Michigan or another State in the United States ? If not currently licensed in the State of Michigan, ability to obtain a Michigan PE license within 6 months through reciprocity. Required Experience (minimum requirements) ? Ten years or more of experience in the design and construction of electrical systems involving new buildings, renovations, and system upgrades. ? Or ? Ten years or more of experience in the design and construction of high voltage electrical distribution systems for campus or municipal electrical systems. ? Demonstrated experience performing Inspection and quality control for electrical construction projects ? Construction contract management experience ? Budget and cost estimating experience. Experience using GIS software and Building Information Management (BIM), computer aided design application software, such as MEP, CloudWorx, SketchUp, Chief Architect ? Extensive experience interpreting building codes including the NEC, Michigan Building Code, NFPA codes, and the Federal ADA. ? Experience with lighting design for both interior and exterior areas. ?
