This role is designed for individuals who are in the process of completing their apprenticeship training, allowing them to gain hands-on experience while learning essential skills and principles necessary for the trade. The incumbent will spend a significant amount of time acquiring apprenticeship-type skills and knowledge, with the potential to exercise more independence in job tasks as they progress through the apprenticeship program. The program allows for advancement from a D level to an A level, contingent upon passing all formal training and job experience requirements to become a journey-level lineman. In this role, the apprentice will assist with the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of both overhead and underground electrical power lines and systems. This work will be performed both on the ground and at heights using power poles or bucket trucks. The apprentice will also assist in the construction and maintenance of transmission and substation facilities, handle service calls related to power outages, and continue to receive training in both classroom and on-the-job settings. Safety is a critical component of this position, and the apprentice will be expected to follow all safety guidelines as part of their training. The apprentice may also be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays, especially during emergencies and disasters as part of the City’s recovery force. Additional responsibilities may include assisting with street light repairs, supporting meter readers, performing welding and masonry tasks, and operating motorized equipment and hand tools. The role may also involve routine maintenance of electrical equipment and tools, as well as janitorial duties in shop areas.
