Heavy Motor Equipment Operator

HEAVY MOTOR EQUIPMENT OPERATOR • *APPLICANTS MUST COMPLETE THE EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION TO BE CONSIDERED. APPLICATION CAN BE FOUND AT 2021 Amended Employment Application.xlsx** GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Operates one or more types of specialized heavy automotive equipment and performs a variety of manual tasks in connection with such operations; does related work as required. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF CLASS: Work involves responsibility for the efficient operation of specialized heavy automotive equipment used in maintenance for construction projects. Greater skill is required than in the operation of other types of equipment and there is greater responsibility for the safety of others. Additional responsibility is involved for making minor repairs to equipment and for ordinary servicing. Supervision is received from the foreman on the job who assigns tasks and inspects the work in progress and upon completion. EXAMPLES OF WORK: (illustrative only) • Operates Construction Equipment, grader, sweeper, roller, caterpillar tractor with equipment and other types of heavy equipment in the construction and maintenance of streets. • Operates heavy snowplow in the clearing of roads. • May operate a tractor-trailer. • Operates heavy equipment in connection with cutting banks, cutting and filling ditches, removing stumps, stripping gravel pits and related department tasks. • Performs minor maintenance and repair work on assigned equipment. • Loads and unloads vehicles. • Performs a variety of simple manual tasks such as cleaning culverts, shoveling snow, painting and road maintenance work. • May be required to work down to lower level position from time to time. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heavy automotive equipment; ability to service and make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; mechanical aptitude; dependability; good physical condition. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from High School or possession of a High School Equivalency diploma and minimum one year of experience in the operation of vehicles 26,000 pounds or more, Class B, CDL with air brakes and a tanker endorsement. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT UPON APPOINTMENT: • Ability to Pass a D.O.T. pre-employment drug screen and physical. • Ability to pass a skills test (road test). • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and written. • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively. • Good interpersonal skills. • Knowledgeable of D.O.T. regulations. • Must be 18 years or older with a clean Driver’s License. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR KINGSTON WATER DEPARTMENT EMPLOYEES ONLY: Graduation from High School or possession of a High School Equivalency diploma and a valid New York State Class B, CDL driver’s license.
