Mechanical Technician

Berkeley Lab is hiring Mechanical Technicians to provide routine technical support in mechanical and electro-mechanical systems. Under direct supervision, you’ll follow set methods and instructions to perform standardized tasks using basic mechanical knowledge. What You Will Do: • Perform technical tasks such as fabricating, assembling, machining, installing, operating, testing, inspecting, maintaining, and troubleshooting components and systems used in scientific research, including accelerators, optics, vacuum systems, detectors, and cryogenics. • Learn to work with various metallic and non-metallic materials and processes. Additional Responsibilities as Needed: • Use calculators for required measurements and calculations. • Use computers to access and document part, component, material, and specification information. What is Required: Mechanical Technician Level 1: • 1–2 years of experience with hand tools or in a machine shop. • Basic mechanical or electromechanical knowledge to complete assignments. • Skills in fabrication, assembly, machining, installation, operation, testing, inspection, maintenance, or troubleshooting. • Familiarity with standard hand, power, and machine tools. In Addition to the Above, Mechanical Technician Level 2: • 2-4 years of experience with hand tools or in a machine shop. • Advanced knowledge of mechanical or electromechanical troubleshooting, fabrication, assembly, installation, and maintenance. • Advanced experience using standard hand, power and machine tools. Desired Qualifications: • AA in Mechanical Engineering Technology or equivalent industry/military training. • Ability to interpret basic engineering drawings and diagrams. • Knowledge of mechanical parts, including sizes, tolerances, materials, and applications. • Computer proficiency. • Valid California Driver’s License. Notes: • This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay. • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes. • Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement. • The expected hourly rate for the Mechanical Technician Level 1 position is $32.00 - $38.00, which fits into the full range of $28.65 - $41.52 hourly depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience. • The expected hourly rate for the Mechanical Technician Level 2 position is $38.00 - $46.00, which fits into the full range of $34.36 - $49.83 hourly depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience. • This position is subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment. • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Associate Mechanical Engineer- Department of Building Inspection (5207 TEX)

Role Description: Under general supervision, performs mechanical engineering work in the office reviewing plans for building permits to comply with the California Energy Code, San Francisco Green Building Code, San Francisco Mechanical Code, and the portion of San Francisco Building Code that governs building mechanical and life safety/smoke control systems. Essential functions include: Assisting the public in obtaining their building permits expeditiously and informing them of related issue in an efficient and professional manner. Associate engineers are expected to perform counter duties, field inspections, assigning work to staff members, respond to public inquires regarding code applications, job status. Performs quality review checks of others and writes reports and correspondence. Responsible for mechanical system compliance of the codes for building construction of all types and sizes, including high and low rise commercial, residential buildings. Once hired, must complete on-going professional training requirements to familiarize with latest code changes and California state requirements of AB 717 certification.

Engineer - Mechanical - Citywide (5241) - (C00349)

Under general direction, performs difficult and responsible professional engineering work in the field and office; and supervises engineering personnel, including consultants engaged in such work. The essential functions of the Engineer class may vary depending on assignment and include: • Supervising professional and technical engineering personnel, consultants and other related staff engaged in a variety of engineering projects; assigning and reviewing work. • Selecting, training, motivating, monitoring, evaluating and counseling staff. • Analyzing workloads and budgets, supervising and reviewing the preparation of documents; reviewing and analyzing bids for conformance with specifications and for award approval; negotiating and modifying contracts and resolving claims and disputes. • Supervising and monitoring the inspection of complex engineering projects and organizing and supervising the activities of field inspection staff. • Advising operating staff in water/wastewater treatment goals and process optimization; directing or participating in scientific research projects related to the study of water and/or wastewater treatments and their effects on the environment and other engineering functions. • Preparing and reviewing engineering designs, drawings and specifications; performing and reviewing difficult engineering calculations. • Reviewing federal, regional, and local regulations and legislation affecting engineering work. • Analyzing and solving complex engineering and process related problems. • Writing, reviewing, and approving departmental correspondence, reports and other related documents; conducting meetings and making presentations to staff, committees, approval agencies, clients, and the general public. • May act as a project engineer or resident engineer for complex projects. • Performs other related duties as required.
