Mechanical Design Engineer

Mechanical Design Engineer The Mechanical Design Engineer (Test & Automation Staff Engineer) plays a vital role within Hypertherm Associates' Testing & Automation Engineering team. This position is responsible for the end-to-end design, development, and construction of custom machinery that supports manufacturing operations across the organization. This position will: • Fabricate fixtures, tools, and other facilities to support initial prototyping to larger scale production efforts. • Provide both engineering and hands-on execution of design and fabrication duties, taking an original concept through all stages of a project, including design, analysis, building, and testing. • Leverage experience with CAD modeling, CNC Programming, Laboratory-Prototype-Product Assembly, Fabrication, Testing, and Documentation skills. • Team well with other creative engineers, assemblers, and Mechanical Technicians. • Apply fundamental physical laws and engineering techniques to answer key questions and solve problems, performing engineering analyses with accuracy. • Conduct, monitor, troubleshoot, and improve production using experiments, modeling, programming, and hardware solutions. • Develop modeling tools and/or programs that meet project goals for accuracy, precision, cost, and schedule. • Use tools, such as FEA, to evaluate design statics, dynamics, fluid flow, heat transfer, and materials specifications to evolve the development of working prototypes and specialized products. • Produce 3D CAD models and detail drawings with a keen eye towards manufacturability. Professional Requirements • The ideal candidate will bring 5+ years of mechanical engineering design experience in industry, have excellent academic credentials (BS Degree), the ability to design for a wide range of fabrication processes, capabilities in FEA and CAD, and excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and communication. • Manufacturing and precision machining experience is strongly desired. • Full proficiency in 3D modeling and drafting software is required, familiarity/skill with SolidWorks is preferred. Candidate must have a complete understanding of drafting standards, a talent for spatial conceptualization, and be able to communicate clearly and accurately using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing. Excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and effective communication and prioritization skills are also required.
