Product Development Engineer - Moffitt West

Product Development Engineer Status: Exempt Job Summary: Moffitt is seeking a motivated Entry-Level Engineer to assist in the design, construction, and operation of an industrial fan airflow test lab in Denison, Texas. The role offers hands-on experience in airflow and motor testing, instrumentation, and data analysis, making it ideal for engineers passionate about airflow dynamics and system performance testing. The Product Development Engineer (PDE) will be responsible for planning, design, construction, and operation of an AMCA certified fan test laboratory. The PDE will be responsible for developing test methodologies, test automation and ensuring compliance with industry standards. The PDE will also provide engineering support at the factory for products made in the Denison, TX facility. The job is not remote or hybrid and is in Denison, Texas. This position requires 10% overnight travel. Key Responsibilities: Lab Design & Development: • Assist in the design and construction of the fan airflow, motor calibration and sound test labs. • Select and integrate measurement instrumentation, including flow sensors, pressure gauges, and velocity probes. • Select and set up Data Acquisition System (DAQ). • Work with cross-functional teams to source equipment and materials. Lab Testing & Data Collection: • Develop and implement fan performance testing procedures aligned with industry standards (AMCA, ASHRAE, etc.). • Conduct experiments to measure fan volumetric flow, power, efficiency, noise levels, and air pressure drop. • Analyze and interpret airflow test data. Lab Operations & Maintenance: • Maintain calibration and accuracy of measurement equipment. • Ensure lab safety protocols and adherence to engineering best practices. • Assist in troubleshooting and resolving lab setup issues. Collaboration & Reporting: • Work alongside senior engineers to evaluate test results and optimize lab processes. • Prepare reports and documentation for internal and external stakeholders. • Stay updated on advancements in airflow measurement, fan and motor technology, and testing methodologies. Factory Support: • Be the boots on the ground for Moffitt engineering at the Denison factory with collaborative feedback from engineers at Moffitt headquarters. • Assist or lead prototypes. • Solve production or quality problems that are design related. Must Have Education and Experience: • Education: 4-year engineering or technical degree. • SolidWorks experience or equivalent CAD experience. Preferred Experience: • 1-3 years of product development experience in the HVAC industry or a similar industry. • Test lab experience • Knowledge of VFD-controlled motors, centrifugal fans, and test instrumentation. • Experience with data acquisition software and airflow measurement techniques. • Basic programming skills for automation or data logging (Python, MATLAB, or LabVIEW). • Regulatory and Compliance experience like Underwriters Laboratories (UL). • Fan and motor design and application engineering principles. • Sheet metal, fasteners, hardware and industrial cabinetry design experience. Skill Requirements: • Understanding of fluid mechanics and HVAC principles. • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office Suite and Acrobat or Bluebeam Revu. • Self-motivated, responsible, and dependable with the ability to work independently as well as in team setting. • Able to prioritize and apply appropriate urgency. • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills with professional presence on the phone, video calls and in person. • Must have a technical mindset that can be applied to design and problem solving. • Experience in engineering and quality management system tools such as root cause analysis, Ishikawa diagram, Pareto Chart, Process Capability, 8D problem solving, FMEA, DVP&R, six sigma, and brainstorming is desired.
