Electrician

Position Classification Staff Employment Type Full-Time Benefits Full Time Benefitted Department Facilities & Operations Summary Performs a variety of journey level activities to install, maintain, and repair electrical systems, equipment, and appliances. Duties 1. Reviews and assesses requirements of submitted work orders. 2. Reads rough drawings, schematics, and blue prints for installation/renovation of electrical systems. Repairs, maintains, and installs wiring, motors, transformers (three phase system), generators, and lights. 3. Studies plans, drawings, specifications, and work orders to determine material and work requirements. 4. Determines sequence of repairs and installations. 5. Operates a variety of electrical testing equipment. 6. Designs and installs electrical systems; lighting and alarm systems. 7. Follows all required safety measures and uses protective gear as needed to prevent injury to self and others. 8. Orders project supplies and materials as needed. 9. Perform other duties as assigned. Education/Background High School Diploma or GED equivalent with five years full time work experience as a journey level electrician including responsibility for electrical system design. Requires a NM Classification JE 98 certification. Preferred candidate will hold EE98 certification, as well. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred. Job Knowledge Knowledge of electrical system design, installation maintenance, and repair principles and practices. Knowledge of all industry standards, codes, and specifications for safe electrical systems installation, maintenance, and repair. Knowledge of the safe and proper use of all tools and equipment necessary for electrical repairs and maintenance. Keep all assigned work spaces in safe clean and orderly condition. Skill in designing, installing, maintaining, and repairing a variety of electrical systems and equipment. Skill in working in an environment subject to changing priorities, exposure to electrical hazards, and varying environmental conditions. Skill in troubleshooting problems in various electrical equipment and electrical circuits. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships. Working Conditions/ Physical Demands (With or Without Accommodations) This position is part of a collective bargaining unit upon completion of the 90-day trial period. The incumbent is required to respond after hours during emergencies when called out and report to work for regular assigned shift during emergency campus closures. This position will typically work five (5) eight-hour days per week, either Monday through Friday between the hours of 6:00 am and 5:00 pm, based on staffing requirements of the department. A call-out list is assigned on a rotation basis having skilled craft employees and general maintenance staff employees on call each week. Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous situations that require following extensive safety precautions. Required to operate a University vehicle in the day to day operations. May be required to work additional hours or days depending on circumstances. Other Requirements a. Requires a valid driver’s license. b. Line Electrician - Substation Maintenance Job Summary Responsible for the removal, repair, installation, and troubleshooting of electrical components, systems, and instrumentation equipment in an industrial setting. Duties include preventative maintenance, advanced diagnostics, process optimization, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. The role requires strong knowledge of AC/DC drives, PLCs, VFDs, overhead cranes, instrumentation devices, and low-to-medium voltage equipment. The technician may also mentor or train others, interpret technical manuals and schematics, and participate in safety and environmental programs. Line Electrician - Substation Maintenance Responsibilities • Removal, repair and installation of electrical components, electrical systems, analysis and diagnosis, advanced troubleshooting and systems/process optimization; may mentor or train other electrical workers • Safe completion of routine and non-routine repairs and construction • Perform preventative maintenance including installation, repair and troubleshooting of industrial electrical and/or instrumentation equipment (i.e. substations, power distribution systems, switchgear motors, motor controls, systems and components, process controls, instrumentation and pneumatic equipment) • Must have strong knowledge in the maintenance and troubleshooting of AC/DC drives, PLCs, overhead cranes, management control systems, calibration of field transmitters/transducers and weigh scales, and low and medium voltage equipment • Ability to perform installations and renovations compliant with regulatory agency standards • Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and work area instructions, participate in safety and environmental activities, and use plant and equipment correctly at all times Line Electrician - Substation Maintenance Position Requirements • Completion of an approved certified program for instrumentation/control system, electronics, & electrical; OR • Minimum of four (4) years experience in industrial instrumentation/electrical repair and maintenance; OR • Associates degree or Trade School Certification in the related field and two (2) years experience performing maintenance and repair of industrial automation, instrumentation, and electrical systems • Must have completed academic and practical competencies required (this includes Line of Progression requirements for internal employees where LOP Exists) and have experience demonstrating the required aptitude. The selected candidate shall demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge and skills while also passing a written assessment where required. This exam is based on skills/abilities and/or academic knowledge; as well as safety. Line Electrician - Substation Maintenance Preferred Position Requirements • High School diploma or GED • Experience with VFDs, PLC, HMI, and/or SCADA Control Systems • Experience working with low and medium voltages • Experience with AC and/or DC controls • Experience with instrumentation devices • Experience with diagnostic electrical test equipment • Experience with HVAC equipment • $50 per-shift stipend available to employees assigned to specific positions, within the Smelter Electrical and E/I Maintenance departments, which meet program guidelines. Employees who are required to work on-site are eligible for a $750 monthly housing allowance, provided they meet program guidelines. #LI-Onsite
