Assistant Professor of Electrical Technology

Role: Garden City Community College is a vibrant and dynamic community college located in the heart of the rural Southwest Kansas high plains region. Officially designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution, the College serves a student population which reflects the area’s rich diversity. The College serves approximately 2,000 students across multiple populations including on-campus, online, and area high schools and has a history of strong program options in both transfer and technical education. The College is located in Garden City, a community with a recent history of robust population growth. Garden City has many amenities including arts and culture, plentiful shopping, and daily jet service to Dallas. Garden City Community College’s Technical Education and Workforce Development Division seeks a faculty member to develop and lead a program in Electrical Technology, aligned closely with the college’s Construction Technology and Industrial Machine Mechanic program. This faculty position requires a passion for sharing the opportunities skilled trades provide for students and have an enthusiasm for working with students of all skill levels, ages, and experiences. The position will teach topics such as electrical theory; print reading; residential, commercial, and industrial wiring methods; and safety and electrical codes in both laboratory and lecture settings. The teaching assignment may include daytime, evening, weekend, and/or hybrid online instruction. The typical teaching load is 5/5 or 30 credit hours per year. This is a tenure track, full-time (172-day) faculty position covered by the Negotiated Agreement. Supervision is provided by an Assistant Dean, the Dean of Technical Education, and the Vice President for Instructional Services. Essential Functions and Responsibilities: • Work with Construction Technology and Industrial Machine Mechanic faculty and Technical Education administration to develop a program (learning outcomes, courses, program outcomes, etc.) that meet the Kansas Board of Regents program alignment in Electrical Technology. • Teaching assigned day, evening, and/or weekend courses using established standards and course syllabi. • Develop and continually enhance robust skills in best practices for teaching and learning. The college provides financial support and compensation incentives for professional development in teaching and learning and subject matter areas. • Remaining current in subject matter and in the techniques most effective to promote student learning including developing strategies for the future. • Providing individual and group facilitation of learning, diagnostic assessment of students, and identification of appropriate learning materials. • Participating in course and curriculum design, student advisement, program review, advisory council, and division activities as required to maintain and improve the learning program. • Participate robustly in the faculty job expectations—Appendix A of the Negotiated Agreement • Demonstrating initiative and actively recruiting students for the program. • Participating in staff and college meetings and contributing through appropriate committee assignments. • Performing other relevant tasks as assigned. Knowledge and Skills: Required: • Five years of industry or instructional experience with recognized industry credentials/certifications OR • A degree (two- or four-year) in the electrical technology or a related field Preferred: Preference will be given to those candidates who establish the highest level of professional competency as evidenced by: • Experience in secondary or post-secondary education • Experience in curriculum development and program content • Knowledge of instructional design for online learning including Canvas, Blackboard, and other learning management systems. • Record of established industry partnerships

About the Department The City of Garden City is accepting applications for Journeyman Lineman with the Electric Department. This position is responsible for the installation and maintenance of electrical power systems, street lighting systems, airport electrical systems and devices unique to a municipal system. Position Duties • Operates bucket or derrick truck, puller tensioner, air compressor, puller and other equipment. • Learns the core and use of tools of the trade: phasing sticks, phase rotation, meggers, etc. • Uses and cares of hot line tools and rubber goods. • Installs and maintains overhead and underground feeders as well as replace poles, cross arms, lightening arrestors, insulators and fused disconnects and switches. • Participates in the stand-by trouble call rotation. • Builds and troubleshoot three phase transformer banks and three phase pad mount transformers. • Assists in inventory control. • Learns and performs first aid and CPR as required. • Attends department safety meetings. • Take written and oral exams to prove work competence. • Learns OSHA 29 CFR 1910.269. • Maintain City vehicles, equipment, and tools in good working condition. • Attend any additional trainings and/or certifications required by supervisor. • Serve as crew leaders when Foreman are not around and as required. • Scheduled for on-call rotation. Minimum Qualifications Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Skill in safely covering up and gloving distribution and sub-transmission circuits up to and including 35KV, locating and correcting defects in electrical systems and equipment. Skill in the use of grounding equipment and devices used on high voltage systems. Knowledge of the National Electric Safety codes and practices. Knowledge in the standard practices, materials, tools and equipment used in the electrical trade. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices and procedures. Education, Certification and Experience: High school diploma or GED. Completion of a U.S. Department of Labor and Kansas Human Resources apprenticeship program including 8,000 hours of instruction. Over three years of experience as a Line Maintainer or related field. Valid Kansas CDL driver’s license required within 6 months of employment. Other Qualifications Environment: Works in all types of weather. Majority of work is performed outdoors, i.e., extreme, moderate and temperate cold and heat, snow, rain, hail, sleet, high and gusting winds, dust and dry conditions.
