CARPENTER

Major Duties What to Expect Builds a variety of furniture and wood items in a variety of shapes and sizes with interlocking pieces, movable parts and different accessories that require precise fit and joining. Computes measurements, develops dimensions and individual patterns, adjusts incomplete blueprints, sketches and work requests for projects to be constructed from initial layout to completion. Determines materials and equipment needed to carry out assigned projects. Measures, cuts, constructs and repairs wood or wood substitute items such as scaffolds, staging parts, panels, bins pallets, concrete forms, dry walls, sheet rock, sheathing and roof decking. Sets up, adjusts and operates hand and power tools; performs minor maintenance on tools. Prepares surfaces by accepted techniques and ensures smoothness, level and shape requirements. Finishes projects using stain, varnish and paint. Repairs playground, exercise, and ball field equipment; sets up and uses scaffolding, staging and ladders for activities and special events. Installs dry wall, doors, trim and roofing materials. Assists the electrician, plumber, and painter in making simple repairs and painting of structures and facilities. Works at benches, with materials on supports, from ladders and scaffolds, which require overhead work in stretched, cramped or awkward positions. Exposed to falls, falling objects, flying splinters and chips, shock from electrical tools. Works inside and outside, subject to inclement weather, dust, heat, noise, sawdust in the air, falls from ladders or rooftops. Lifts and carries objects weighing up to 45 lbs independently and objects over 45 lbs with assistance. Performs other related duties as required. Qualifications What are we looking for? Knowledge of and skill in using accepted carpenter trade methods and techniques; ability to develop and apply individual specifications for projects; interpret and develop dimensions, plans and patterns based on user's needs and requests; complete understanding of shop mathematics to plan and compute complex and exact specifications with features such as arcs, tangents and circles; ability to set up, adjust and adapt hand and power tools to accomplish tasks such as cutting bevels, rabbets, chamfers, dados, grooves, and miter points; laminating and bending; and fine surfacing of materials; ability to read, interpret and apply building plans, specifications, blueprints, sketches and building codes; knowledge of the strength, appearance and cost of a variety of softwoods, hardwoods, ply woods, veneers and wood substitutes. Must possess or be able to obtain applicable government operator permits. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Works from plans, blueprints, and oral instructions; interprets and develops dimensions, plans and patterns for projects based on user's needs and requests; determines kind and type of materials and tools which will be needed, using his own initiative. Carpenter I

POSITION TITLE: Carpenter I REPORTS TO: Maintenance Director BEGINNING DATE: Open Until Filled NATURE OF WORK: An employee in this class performs simple tasks in the field of carpentry. The appearance and finish of work produced at this level is not critical. Examples of such work are building and repairing frameworks, scaffolds, supports, and simple wooden articles. The employee is given specific instructions for work to be done. A higher level employee is available to assist in solving any problems that may arise. Since work is closely checked while in progress, errors of any serious consequences are unlikely to occur. Direct supervision is given to employees at this level. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: • Ability to use and care for equipment and tools used in performing work assignments • Ability to follow simple instructions • Must furnish own hand tools • Must have a valid NC driver’s license and provide own transportation to and from work • Must be willing to take and successfully pass the test for commercial driver’s license • Must be capable of and willing to climb ladders and work on scaffold • Must be willing to work overtime (weekends or afternoons) when necessary • Must be drug and alcohol free and will be periodically tested for drugs and alcohol • Must have and maintain a driving record that qualifies for school system insurance coverage • Must be able to obtain CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) permit within 6 months of employment and CDL License within 1 year of employment EDUCATION AND TRAINING: • Some aptitude for carpentry work demonstrated in prior work, school experience or personal activities • Some experience in the performance of manual tasks is preferred • Must have a high school diploma TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 months SALARY: Salary Grade 57 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: • Gathers materials to be used. • Measures and marks materials for cutting. • Cuts and drills wood and other materials using hand and power tools. • Joins materials with nails, screws or glue. • Checks accuracy of work with levels, rulers and measuring tapes. • Fits and nails sheathing on outer walls and roofs in preparation for boards. • Perform duties indoor and outdoor during normal/extreme weather conditions. • Performs other duties as specified by the Maintenance Director and Maintenance Supervisor.
