Maintenance Worker I

Summary Responsible for grounds maintenance, street maintenance, cemetery maintenance, and other related activities. Responsible for mowing, trimming, cleaning and maintain public grounds. Responsible for collecting leaves on a crew, assisting with asphalt and concrete construction/ maintenance, assisting with installation and maintenance of drainage systems Essential Duties and Responsibilities NOTE: This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Employees may perform other related duties as negotiated to meet the ongoing needs of the organization. • Performs a variety of maintenance tasks such as cutting grass using tractors, power riding and push mowers; removing leaves and debris; trimming shrubbery and clearing and landscaping grounds. • Works as a crew member to construct or repair concrete and asphalt; repairs potholes; shovels and rakes asphalt; repairs sidewalks, driveway aprons, and other concrete structures; assists with mixing and pouring concrete; assists with setting forms and finishing work. • Operates pickup, dump trucks, air hammers, and other light to medium equipment; checks the oil and other fluid levels, and tires. • Cleans out catch basins using shovels and pitchforks; sweeps and cleans sidewalks and streets. • Cleans water and wastewater sand beds, lagoons, and clarifiers; helps remove iron from beds. • Cleans buildings, washes floors, windows and cleans restrooms; stocks restrooms with paper products. • Assists with signing for construction and flagging traffic. • Cleans public grounds by picking up trash. • Plants, waters, fertilizes and trims trees and plant materials. • Erects street signs. • Works as a member of a leaf collection crew. • Digs graves with a shovel; assists with funeral activities • Operates dump trucks, tractors, and loaders; operates push mowers and trimmers. • Obtains parts and supplies and transports them. • Assists in other crews as needed. • Perform other duties as assigned. Required Education and/or Experience High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and 6 months or more related experience and or training performing unskilled maintenance work. Special Requirement Valid N.C. driver's license and acceptable driving record. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Working knowledge of the methods and techniques applied in unskilled manual labor. • Working knowledge of standard hand tools, operation of light equipment, and materials used in assigned work. • Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned work. • Ability to work cooperatively as a team member and respond courteously to citizens. • Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions. Physical Requirements Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; 50 pounds of force frequently; and 20 pounds constantly. Must be able to perform the basic life functions of stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing and repetitive motions. Vocal communication required for expressing or exchanging ideas. Hearing is required to listen and comprehend the spoken word from others. Must possess the visual acuity to operate mobile equipment such as loaders and dump truck in a safe manner. Working Conditions The employees are subject to hazards associated with public works including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and oils.

Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license, maintain an acceptable driving record, have reliable transportation, and be able to operate a motor vehicle safely as part of their job duties.
