Licensed HVAC Engineer (PE) – Geothermal Systems Job Type: Full-time Industry: HVAC / Renewable Energy / Building Systems Engineering About Us: We are a growing geothermal energy solutions firm focused on delivering sustainable HVAC systems, with a specialization in geothermal technology. Our team partners with architects, engineers, and builders to create high-performance mechanical systems that reduce energy use and carbon emissions. As we expand, we’re looking for a licensed HVAC Engineer to lead the design and oversight of our geothermal HVAC projects. Position Summary: We are seeking a Licensed HVAC Engineer (PE) with expertise in drafting plumbing and duct system layouts, as well as familiarity with life safety codes and commercial building requirements. In this role, you will be responsible for stamping geothermal ground loop designs, ensuring proper heat pump selection and integration, and collaborating closely with internal teams, external engineers and clients. Key Responsibilities: • Create and review HVAC and plumbing drawings, including ductwork and piping layouts, in AutoCAD or Revit. • Stamp mechanical and geothermal ground loop design documents for permitting and construction. • Ensure all systems comply with applicable codes, including ASHRAE, NFPA, and IBC. • Provide guidance on geothermal heat pump sizing and implementation for commercial and institutional buildings. • Communicate technical concepts clearly to project stakeholders, including clients, architects, and contractors. • Collaborate with installation and commissioning teams to support successful project execution. • Contribute to documentation, reports, and submittals for AHJs (Authorities Having Jurisdiction). Qualifications: • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Mechanical Engineering (required). • 5+ years of experience in HVAC system design and documentation. • Strong drafting and documentation skills (AutoCAD, Revit preferred). • Knowledge of life safety, mechanical, and plumbing codes for commercial buildings and schools. • Experience with geothermal systems and heat pump implementation is a major plus. • Excellent communication and organizational skills. • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines. Job Description This Opportunity WSP is currently initiating a search for a Full-Time Early Career Mechanical Engineer for our Troy, NY office. Your Impact • Under general supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, surveys, blueprints, schematics, data, technical drawings, computer-generated reports, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction. • Assist with performing basic professional mechanical engineering work relating to conducting research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, equipment, resources, building, infrastructure, usage, and mechanical systems to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits. • Perform routine engineering functions and provide entry-level technical assistance on various design requirements, load calculations, and operating strategies to account for the proper installation and functioning of equipment and systems according to specifications. • Assist with verifying the characteristics of a site and providing basic technical assistance on various engineering, design, and construction issues. • Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation and specifications using electronic systems, drawings, and field/work site notebook/logs. • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures which include but are not limited to, location data, statistical documentation, engineering studies and surveys, and construction. • Complete training on assigned tasks. • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures. • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs. Who You Are Required Qualifications • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or closely related discipline. • 0 to 1 years of relevant post education experience. • Excellent research skills with analytical mindset. • Familiarity with process and concepts for design/build. • Familiarity with relevant mechanical system and construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements. • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience. • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment. • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives. • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools. • Familiarity with discipline-specific design software (i.e., AutoCAD, CAM). • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies. • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek. • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements. Job Summary The Mechanical Shop Supervisor directs the continuous, efficient and safe day-to-day operations of the Mechanical Shop. Monitors all unit performance and adjusts and directs work to correct for deficiencies. Uses CMMS extensively to make data based decisions and prepares summary reports as requested. • Work with Procurement Services to source and manage contractors for project work. Manage and supervise contract work performed including tracking expenses and adjusting work to maintain plan budget. • Serve as client service liaison for Mechanical Shop. Work directly with clients communicating timelines, responding to issues and escalating to Division leadership if necessary. • Ensures preventive maintenance (PM) is performed on all assigned equipment and maintains records in CMMS; develops PM procedures based on manufacturer’s recommendations and usage history. Supervises performance of assigned preventive maintenance work. • Troubleshoots equipment; performs complex maintenance and repair or coordinates with internal or external resources and assists with those repairs.
