Job Details Description Position: Design Engineer Salary Grade: E-2 Purpose: Create mechanical designs for machines, tooling and mechanisms based on machine specifications, customer replacement part orders, special requests, industry trends, advancing technology and current standards of excellence. Make changes to existing designs and processes for improving manufacturability and quality and reducing costs. Reports to designated supervisor. Responsibilities: Quantifiable metrics to which a person is held accountable • Capable of creating design concepts, layouts, part details and assembly prints as directed or as required to meet project specifications with little or no quality issues. • Ability to follow established design processes for project execution including coordinating testing, documentation, communication, collaboration and follow up with personnel associated with assigned projects. • Able to train and mentor less experienced engineers and designers in their job functions. • Contribute ideas and assistance in reviewing customer specifications, conducting analysis, and assessing feasibility, risks and timeframes for special requests and customizations. • Proficient in effective critical thinking. Can respond to various situations requiring judgment, search for solutions and use discoveries to develop new applications. Can troubleshoot the performance of completed assemblies to perform root cause analysis and obtain specified results. • Recommend, implement, and drive process improvements to eliminate waste to improve flow to shorten lead times. Support and participate in process audits. • Organize and conduct concise, timely and logical presentations, discussions, and reports for a variety of stakeholders. • Actively participate in team goal setting and accountability meetings. Working here, you’ll feel part of a family that is dedicated to making a difference and helping others WHAT YOU'LL DO Primary Function/Primary Goals/Objectives: The Manufacturing Process Engineer implements and maintains plant equipment, systems, and other fixed assets to a high standard of safety, quality and productivity at the lowest possible cost while maintaining compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements. This role provides powder packaging equipment and powder handling support to all aspects of the operation. Major Responsibilities: • Applies working knowledge of engineering disciplines • Independently conceives and develops approaches to problem solving that requires advanced technical knowledge • Solves problems that have a variety of complex features, such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials and difficult coordination requirements • Plans schedules, conducts or coordinates detailed phases of the engineering work in a part of a major project, or in a total project of moderate scope • Facilitates the definition of a project scope with clients • Applies new technology where feasible • Directs the efforts of others such as technicians and outside resources • Interfaces with project team members, department managers, designers, R&D and Corporate and Division Engineering • Performs tasks such as writing RCEs, VCRs, Scope Documents, etc. • Manages capital projects • Performs other work-related duties as assigned Operations Technical Support: • Provide technical support to the Sturgis plant, division engineering and the Quality Assurance function in the areas of powder packaging equipment, powder handling, new product introductions, new equipment start-up, manufacturing equipment optimizations, vendor qualifications and process alternative evaluations. • Implement new and/or current manufacturing methods into manufacturing • Monitor production to determine areas of improvement and react to unforeseen production/manufacturing issues • Provide technical training to plant personnel including engineering, equipment operators, electricians, instrument technicians and maintenance • Create and execute validation activities according to plant/division policy Design Engineering: • Complete design of process systems, incorporating best available technologies while adhering to Abbott policies, regulatory requirements, GMP standards, Abbott Engineering Standards and Environmental Health/Safety regulations • Create equipment/process specifications, drawings, and procedures, as required, and ensure that existing documentation is accurate and appropriate • Research, recommend, implement, and qualify replacement parts for discontinued/obsolete components and equipment Cost Reduction/Productivity Improvement: • Identify and implement cost reduction and productivity improvement projects within Abbott Nutrition • Areas of focus include process improvements, new manufacturing processes and new technologies EHS: Demonstrate accountability and responsibility for Environmental Health and Safety performance and compliance through active participation and support of Abbott’s EHS program WHAT YOU'LL BRING Education: B.S. in Engineering or applicable experience. Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or Electrical Engineering preferred. Background: • Knowledge of applicable regulatory standards and requirements for infant formula and nutrition • 3+ years’ experience in engineering/project management or advanced education to achieve level of skill Skills/Specialized Knowledge: • Experience in development and evaluation of Process Flow Diagrams, P&IDs, and sanitary equipment design • AutoCad experience is required • Work experience in the food/medical industry under FDA regulation preferred • Good communication skills, both written and verbal is required • Ability to design and improve manufacturing processes to enhance efficiency and reduce waste • Managing projects from conception to completion, including budgeting, scheduling, and implementation • Experience with automation technologies to improve production efficiency • Experience in programming and troubleshooting programmable logic controllers (PLCs) used in automated systems is preferred. • Possesses a working technical knowledge and application of concepts, practices and procedures • Works on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data involves a review of identifiable factors • Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action • Strong leadership skills required • Interacts well with diverse groups within the operation and maintains strong working relationships with internals in a collaborative, fast-paced goal-driven environment • Listens to and understands others’ points of view; possesses interpersonal skills to negotiate and reconcile differences Accountability/Scope/Budget: • Interfaces with production team members, department managers and Division Engineering/QA functions • May represent department/plant on projects or segments of projects • Receives general supervision and exercises some discretion as to work details • Reviews and approves related inputs such as drawings and specifications prepared by technical support personnel • May determine technical objectives of assignments; exercises latitude in approach to problem solving • Leads small project teams; supports larger programs to successful completion • Responsible for completing project tasks within time and budget constraints • Prepares design specifications and recommendations for presentation and approval • Work is reviewed for overall accuracy, completeness and soundness of technical judgment • Identifies and quantifies technical risks and their consequences relative to the success of a project and recommends appropriate action (e.g. reports calculations and recommendations in terms concrete enough for management to make an informed decision) • Coordinates efforts with technical and support staff • Guides the efforts of technicians and outside personnel • This position has a direct impact on productivity and performance throughout the plant.
