The City of Idaho Falls is accepting applications for a full-time Mechanical Inspector. This position performs a variety of professional duties related to the inspection of residential and commercial structures for conformity to current adopted City of Idaho Falls HVAC codes, and local amendments. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works under general supervision of the Chief Plumbing/Mechanical Inspector and Chief Building Official. SUPERVISION EXERCISED None This position will remain open until filled. but we will begin interviewing applicants on July 16th. Conducts plan reviews of mechanical designs to assure compliance with established codes; performs plan reviews for engineers, designers, and architects to ensure plans address code compliance issues. Conducts residential plan reviews for compliance to ACCA Manuals J, S, and D. Inspects heating, ventilation and cooling installations for conformity to codes and standards; determines adequacy and safety of installation; makes records of inspections noting date of approval; issues correction notices regarding code violations; verifies and inspects gas pressure tests, piping size and installation as per the fuel gas code. Reviews and studies heating and cooling codes; explains and interprets code for homeowners and contractors; enforces codes and standards related to the same. Analyzes problems related to heating, and cooling codes; determines remedies or alternative solutions and recommends changes, improvements, or modifications of existing program to Supervisor. Responds to questions from contractors, engineers, designers and homeowners regarding mechanical issues to help avoid design rework and completion of homeowner-initiated projects without rework or code violations. Writes and issues letters of non-compliance to building owners that allow or create unsafe conditions relating to Fuel Gas Code or HVAC systems, etc. Performs general office duties such as answering phones, setting appointments inspections and entering inspection results into computer database. Performs related duties as required. A. Graduation from high school and successful completion of a four (4) year apprenticeship, including specialized training obtained through vocational or technical college, correspondence courses, or in-service, leading to the acquisition of a journeyman HVAC license and certification; AND B. Journeyman-level experience in HVAC installation. OR C. An equivalent combination of education and experience. 2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of HVAC codes and regulations; thorough knowledge of methods, procedures, and practices essential to skilled installation of HVAC systems; thorough knowledge of HVAC tools and equipment; considerable knowledge of City geography. Ability to recognize and identify skilled HVAC installations; ability to perform a variety of tests to determine quality workmanship and installation; ability to enforce codes and standards without partiality; ability to read and interpret building plans and specifications; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with professional contractors, Supervisors and the public. 3. Special Qualifications: Must possess a State of Idaho Journeyman HVAC license. Must be a Certified Commercial/Residential Mechanical Inspector or be able to obtain the certification within 6 months of hire. Acquire Residential Building Inspector Certification within 1 year of employment. Must possess a valid Idaho State Driver's License.
