Job Description AECOM is seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineer to join our Water business line, specializing in heavy mechanical engineering. In this role, you will design, develop, and oversee the fabrication of large-scale mechanical systems that are critical to water infrastructure. You will work on a variety of complex projects involving waterworks gates such as vertical lift gates, radial gates, sluice gates, Tainter gates, and sector gates. Additionally, you will be required to size and select winches, wire rope and chain hoisting systems, hydraulic, pneumatic and electric actuators, gear systems, and other precision mechanisms associated with these gates, delivering solutions that meet the highest standards of performance and reliability. You will be involved with various types of cranes, including Overhead Gantry Cranes and Rail Mounted Gantry Cranes that are associated with these structures. The ideal candidate will also have experience with large pumps and pumping stations. Key Responsibilities • Design and develop heavy mechanical systems for water infrastructure projects. • Create 3D models using Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, and other mechanical design software for use in detailed design drawings. • Engineer and oversee fabrication of waterworks gates, hoists, actuators and associated control systems. • Conduct engineering calculations and analysis to ensure structural integrity and mechanical performance according to industry standards and specifications. • Review and approve engineering drawings and vendor submittals. • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including Civil, Structural, and Electrical Engineers. • Provide technical guidance during manufacturing, installation, and commissioning phases. • Inspect and troubleshoot mechanical systems in the field to ensure quality and compliance. • Manage project schedules, budgets, and deliverables for assigned engineering tasks. • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements. • Prepare technical reports, specifications, and documentation. • Support proposal development by providing technical input and cost estimates. • Interface directly with clients as needed. • The ability to travel a few times a year for site visits and meetings with clients. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications • Bachelor’s Degree from an ABET accredited Mechanical Engineering university program and 6+ years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education. • Ability to work independently with guidance. Preferred Qualifications • 6+ years of mechanical engineering design related to water, heavy infrastructure, or relevant product / heavy industrial machinery engineering. • Experience with locks, dams and other large water works structures. • Professional Engineering licensure in the United States or the ability to obtain licensure within 2 years. • Mechanical design experience of gates, hoisting mechanisms, actuators or large-scale mechanical systems. • Experience with cranes and other lifting devices. • Experience with large pumps and pumping systems. • Strong background in heavy steel fabrication, welding, construction and large-scale mechanical engineering projects. • Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD and other 3D design tools • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel. • Proficiency with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software and analysis methods. What role you will play in our team This position is a mechanical integrity technical position for fixed equipment in support of petrochemical facility. This position provides technical support to the site with a focus on managing the risk-based inspection program, troubleshooting, asset improvement, and technology selection. This position is located at the ExxonMobil Baton Rouge, LA What you will do • Daily mentorship and development of engineers with <5 years’ experience • Communicate and interact daily with Inspection, Maintenance, Process, and Operations team members • Drive site asset improvement in the areas of Safety, Reliability, Environmental Performance, and Equipment Capability and Efficiency in a team setting • Develops and/or reviews fixed equipment repair plans, rerates and modifications, including calculations and drawings • Participates in Equipment Materials Selection & Upgrades. Provides welding support. • Performs Level 1 and 2 Fitness for Service per API 579 • Provides engineering support to maintenance organization executing repairs or improvements in Fixed Equipment • Provides input in developing Annual Maintenance and Turnaround work lists • Lead mechanical integrity engineering role for complex outages and turnarounds • Ensures that all technical recommendations follow industry accepted sound engineering practices and are in accordance with ExxonMobil practices • Analysis of inspection results and recommended future actions • Ownership of unit risk-based inspection program • Analyze site fixed equipment performance About you Skills and Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree or above in Mechanical Engineering or Materials Science from recognized university • Strong interpersonal, leadership and organizational skills • More than five years previous experience as a fixed (stationary) equipment mechanical engineer or materials engineer in a refinery or chemical plant • Demonstrated work experience in a leadership role Preferred Qualifications/ Experience • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards (ASME Sec VIII, B31.3, API 510, 570, 579) • Familiar with API 581 and API 571 • Familiarity with fixed equipment design software (Caesar II, PV Elite, Compress, Sage+) • At least basic knowledge of metallurgy and corrosion associated with refinery/petrochemical process • Strong written and verbal communication skills • Ability to adapt to tight deadlines, heavy workloads, and frequent changes in priorities.
