CNC Machinist I - II Classification: Non-Exempt Reports to: Production Manager Summary/Objective: CNC machinists are responsible for operating and/or setting up multi-axis CNC machines on the factory floor. Machinist’s precision on output is vital and must keep maintenance on machine he or she is working on. Assists in set up and operate computer numerical control machines to cut, shape, or form metal work pieces to required specifications. 2. Assists in the review of setup sheet and specifications to determine setup procedure, machining sequence, and dimensions of finished work piece. 3. Assembles cutting tools in tool holders per the set up sheet. 4. Assists in setting machine for the following: a. Turning center – install chuck jaws or collet pads as required, place cutting tools in the turret or magazine as required and set various axis zero positions. b. Machining center – set fixture holding device, install tooling into magazine and set various axis zero positions. c. Swissturn – Assist in setting up barfeeder, load and set tools, operate machine 5. Loads CNC program into machine with supplied media device. 6. Manipulates controls and enters commands to index cutting tool to specified set point and to start machine. 7. Observes and listens to machine operation to detect malfunctions, such as worn or damaged cutting tools. 8. Changes cutting tools and locations of work piece during machining process as specified in setup instructions. 9. Measures work piece for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as micrometers, dial indicators, and gauges. 10. JOB PROFILE The Machinist/Fabrication Welder position is responsible for applying various welding techniques to cut, join, fabricate and repair metal or other weldable materials in support of heavy equipment repairs and services. The position is also responsible for using various tools for machining tasks on lathes, lapping, milling or boring equipment. Organizes projects from blueprints, sketches, working drawings, and/or verbal instructions. Prepares and completes work using knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, layout and machining procedures. This is a skilled journey-level position requiring ability to design and fabricate parts and equipment to meet unusual or special customer needs or special jigs and holding fixtures for use in equipment repair activities. Reading and interpreting technical shop manuals and electronic reference materials is required. Work is performed primarily in company service shops but may also include customer field locations. Candidates must have experience with standard welding and fabrication equipment, including MIG, TIG, electric arc, heliarc, oxyacetylene, plasma cutter, saw, drill press, grinders, and metal brakes. Welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead directions, and performs structural analysis and reinforcement repairs. Should have working familiarization with heat treat principles, cutting, forming, layout, setup, measurement, and light machining and assembly of components and related equipment.
