The Grinder will be responsible for operating and maintaining grinding machines, focusing on external (OD) and internal (ID) grinding processes, The ideal candidate will have a strong attendtion to detail, excellent problem-solving skiills, and the ability to produce high-quality finished products. Essential Functions: Machine Setup & Operation: • Set up and operate OD and ID grinding machines to perform precision grinding operations on gears, shafts, and other cylindrical components. • Select appropriate grinding wheels, tooling, and machine settings based on material type, blueprint specifications, and required surface finish. • Balance and dress grinding wheels as needed to ensure precision and efficiency. Blueprint Reading & Quality Control: • Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and work instructions to determine grinding parameters. • Use precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, bore gauges, dial indicators, and CMMs to verify part dimensions and tolerances. • Maintain strict adherence to quality standards, identifying and correcting defects before they impact production. Process Optimization & Troubleshooting: • Adjust feeds, speeds, and grinding techniques to optimize cycle times while maintaining part integrity. • Troubleshoot grinding-related issues, including chatter, burn, and dimensional inconsistencies. • Work with engineering and quality teams to refine grinding processes and improve efficiency. Equipment Maintenance & Safety: • Perform routine maintenance on grinding machines, including lubrication, coolant management, and wheel changes. • Follow all safety procedures and wear appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). • Keep the work area clean and organized, ensuring compliance with 5S and lean manufacturing principles. Collaboration & Documentation: • Communicate effectively with supervisors, engineers, and quality inspectors to resolve machining issues. • Complete production logs, inspection reports, and other required documentation accurately. • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance grinding processes and overall shop efficiency. Position Requirements Qualifications & Skills: • High School Diploma or equivalent. • Experience: Minimum 3 to 5 years of OD/ID grinding experience in a precision manufacturing environment, preferably in gear production. • Technical Knowledge: • Proficiency in operating manual and CNC OD/ID grinders. • Strong understanding of grinding wheel selection, dressing, and balancing. • Knowledge of various materials, including hardened steels, and their grinding characteristics. • Blueprint & Measurement Proficiency: • Ability to read and interpret GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) symbols on blueprints. • Skilled in using micrometers, bore gauges, dial indicators, and CMMs for precision measurement. • Attention to Detail: Ability to hold tolerances within ±0.0001" and achieve high surface finish requirements. • Problem-Solving: Strong troubleshooting skills to resolve machining issues and improve processes. • Work Ethic: Reliable, self-motivated, and able to work independently or as part of a team. • Safety Consciousness: Commitment to maintaining a safe and clean working environment. Preferred Qualifications: • Experience with CNC-controlled OD/ID grinding machines. • Knowledge of gear manufacturing processes, including honing and center lapping. • Previous experience in a high-precision aerospace, automotive, or defense manufacturing environment. • Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies. Work Environment & Physical Requirements: • Standing for extended periods while operating grinding machines. • Frequent lifting (up to 25 lbs.), bending, and handling of precision components. • Exposure to coolant, grinding dust, and high-noise environments (with proper PPE provided). • Working with high-speed rotating equipment requires focus and adherence to safety protocols.
