HVAC Technician Apprentice

Job Title: HVAC Apprentice Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt/At-Will Reports To: HVAC Lead Pay Grade/Days: 307/240 Dept./School: Facilities and Maintenance Date Revised: February 2024 Primary Purpose: Assist experienced HVAC technicians in the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and equipment. Assist in maintaining and providing for the safe condition and operation of all HVAC systems in District facilities. Qualifications: Education/Certification: High school diploma or GED Valid Texas driver’s license Must be eligible to drive based on the Texas DPS School Transportation Guidelines Ability to obtain EPA Freon license within one year from the date of hire Special Knowledge/Skills: Ability to follow oral and written instructions and the ability to communicate effectively Demonstrated skill in performing tasks required in assignment Familiar with test equipment and tools associated with HVAC equipment (gauges and electrical) Knowledge of and ability to use hand and power tools Demonstrates through goal setting a clear-cut sense of direction or purpose in daily activities Prompt and thorough in completing and attending to details accurately and efficiently Willing attitude and ability to learn Experience One year of experience in HVAC-related field preferred Major Responsibilities and Duties: • Work closely with senior HVAC technicians to gain practical knowledge and skills in the field. • Perform scheduled filters and belt replacement district wide. • Assist in all aspects of HVAC system installation, maintenance, and repair under the guidance of experienced professionals. • Help with the installation of HVAC systems, including ductwork, piping, wiring, and equipment replacement. • Learn to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals to assist in the installation process. • Assist with troubleshooting systems issues and assist in diagnosing problems with guidance from experienced technicians. • Assist in cleaning process for cooling towers and boilers. • Assist in performing routine maintenance tasks on HVAC systems, such as cleaning, lubricating, and inspecting components. • Participate in repair activities by replacing parts, testing components, and ensuring proper system functionality. • Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures. • Keep shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition. Maintain inventory of District-owned tools, equipment, and materials. • Inspect tools and equipment for safety and efficiency and perform preventative maintenance as need. • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, and when working in potentially dangerous situations, to include compliance with the Clean Air Act. • Attend training sessions, seminars, and workshops to enhance knowledge and skills in HVAC systems and technologies. • Prepare service reports, work orders, and other documentation as required by supervisors. • Pursue relevant certifications or licenses to advance. • Follow all District rules, regulations and policies. • Respond to emergency calls as need and be on-call/stand-by as assigned by supervisor. • Perform other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities: None Equipment Used: Various hand tools, such as drills, socket set, screwdrivers, and test equipment and recovery machine and gauges. Working Conditions: Tobacco Free Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control under stress. Typical school atmosphere. Frequent interruptions. Strenuous standing, stooping, walking, climbing ladders, bending, pushing and pulling, must be physically fit and able to lift and carry items weighing up to 75 pounds. Working indoors, outdoors, in extreme temperatures including hot and cold temperature swings, inclement weather, works with chemicals, exposure to dust, and slippery or uneven walking surfaces. Frequent district wide travel. Skills • 5+ years experience in installation of all HVAC systems and equipment. • Ability to run work and manage crews. • Strong leadership skills • Excellent customer service skills with desire to exceed customer expectations. • Good analytical skills and attention to detail with ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and manuals. • Ability to work independently in a timely manner, making sure job is done correctly the first time.
