Transportation Worker I

This is an extended posting through September 12, 2025 for Transportation Worker I positions in Division 1, Currituck County. Multiple Transportation Worker I positions will be filled from each extended county posting. Interested applicants will only have to apply one time to be considered for all our Transportation Worker I vacancies in each respective county during this time frame. However, if an applicant is interested in applying for a Transportation Worker I position in more than one county, they will need to apply to each respective county posting for which they are seeking employment. These are permanent NCDOT positions with full benefits including health insurance, retirement, vacation and sick leave, etc. Work in this class primarily involves the operation of standard hand tools, power equipment, vehicles, and heavy equipment utilized in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of roads and roadside features for the State's highway and roadway systems. Other duties include inspecting, ensuring work zone safety, and participating in snow & ice removal. Work may include flagging and assisting with maintenance/repair project completion through the use of standard tools and equipment such as tractor with various attachments, curb machine, cutoff saw, dump truck, small wheel and sheep foot rollers, vibratory roller compactor, pulverizer mixer, and pneumatic tire roller; assisting paint crews, erecting road signs, and/or assisting Electronics Technicians with maintenance and installation of signals; operating hand tools for sign installation and replacement as well as dump truck, broom tractor, paint line removing machine, thermoplastic machine, trencher, and edge-line paint gun operation; vegetation control, debris removal, pushing snow, tractor with various attachments and mower operation, dump and flatbed truck operation, assisting in grass and wildflower installation and maintenance.  Work in this class may include assisting with carpentry, welding, steel fabrication or concrete work activities. Management prefers applicants with the following • Experience operating power tools such as chainsaw, weed eater, skill saw, drill, compactor, jackhammer, etc. and/or using small hand tools such as shovels, rakes, brooms, post hole diggers, hammer, screwdriver, torch, etc. • Experience performing manual labor Additional Expectations The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe footwear is needed. Position requires work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays. Employee will be subject to outside extreme environmental conditions, in addition to hazards at highway construction sites, including heavy equipment and highway traffic. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation. High school education General Educational Development Diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
