Mechanical Engineer - Air End Support Engineer - Entry Level

Summary of the Position: As an integral part of the Unit/OEM Product Support Engineering team, this role is responsible for maintaining Air End product lines while driving continuous improvement and cost reduction initiatives. The candidate will support production areas including B2 Assembly, Rotor Shop, and Test, and serve as a key technical resource for both internal teams and external customers. This position leverages performance calculation tools, troubleshooting expertise, and engineering documentation to ensure product excellence and operational efficiency. Location: On-site, Michigan City, Indiana At this time, we are unable to provide visa sponsorship for this role. Minimum Requirements: • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from an ABET-accredited college • 0-3 years experience designing mechanical components for rotating machinery, pumps, transmissions, compressors, and/or engines • Strong background in precision assembly and machining processes • Proficiency in applying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerances (GD&T) • Experience with 3D CAD Software (e.g., Unigraphics NX or equivalent) Preferred Qualifications: • Advanced degree (MSME, MSMET, or MBA) • Experience with Siemens NX CAD software • Working knowledge of SAP ERP and PLM systems • Experience with global engineering collaboration (e.g., Japan, China, Australia, Argentina) • Familiarity with modern safety control systems • Excellent written and verbal communication and project management skills • Hands-on troubleshooting and analytical skills in mechanical systems • Demonstrated ability to lead and collaborate across cross-functional teams Key Responsibilities: • Use performance calculation software to evaluate customer applications and recommend optimal product solutions • Troubleshoot mechanical design issues on the production floor and in the field to improve throughput and first-pass yield • Address vendor and production quality concerns; assist in root cause analysis and implement corrective actions • Lead cost reduction projects and identify opportunities for value engineering • Collaborate with product engineering and customer service to ensure engineering orders meet mechanical specifications • Conduct research and testing to drive incremental improvements to products and components • Maintain and update technical documentation, component drawings, and BOMs • Participate in new product development and design reviews as the sustaining engineering representative • Support Procurement in sourcing, component validation, and vendor communications • Partner with the Quality team to resolve component failures, execute audits, and update outdated documentation • Provide global engineering support to teams in multiple international regions • Contribute to warranty reduction efforts through root cause analysis and solution implementation • Travel up to 5% may be required The successful candidate is responsible for complying with Hitachi Global Air Power Code of Ethics and related policies. Duties and responsibilities: • Leverage performance calculation software to analyze customer applications and identify the optimal product offering that delivers superior performance and reliability. • Support production and field troubleshooting mechanical design-related issues, improving First Past Yield and production throughput. • Point of contact for production and vendor quality issues; assist Quality in resolving supplier issues and executing root cause corrective action; this will include drawing corrections, bill of material corrections, and troubleshooting compressor systems. • Drive mechanical-related cost reduction efforts. • Collaborate with product engineering and interface with customer service to support mechanical requirements on engineered orders to meet customer requirements. • Evaluate mechanical systems, products, components, and applications by designing and conducting research to drive incremental improvements in existing products. • Maintain and update all mechanical documentation ensuring completeness and correctness. • Lead teams to drive incremental improvements in existing products, manufacturing methods, and processes. • Oversight of units/OEM; represent sustaining engineering on New Product Development teams. • Support Supports Procurement by creating accurate component prints, identifying alternative components and suppliers, and answering technical questions from vendors. • Participate in new engineering development projects and contribute to design reviews. • Support quality by identifying the root cause of component failure, performing machine audits, and updating outdated component drawings. • Provide technical support to engineering and sales teams in Japan, China, Australia, and Argentina. • Support cross-functional team focused on warranty reduction. • Occasional travel may be required, 5%. Summary of the position: The Facilities Engineering Department leads the design, installation, operation, maintenance, modification, construction, modernization, and protection of the physical property, facilities, and equipment of Hitachi Global Air Power. This role works directly with the Facilities Engineering Manager on improvement projects within the department and within the Hitachi group.
