Senior Mechanical Designer

Job Description BAE Systems, one of the world's leading defense contractors and a Top Ten Prime Contractor to the Department of War, is hiring a Mechanical Designer to support design and construction of chemical plant facilities at the Holston Army Ammunition Plant in Kingsport, TN. This position will work a 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off, and our hybrid approach provides plenty of on-site collaboration and support for new staff onboarding as well as the flexibility for working remotely some days. In this role, you will be responsible for assisting mechanical engineers in technical tasks to support design and construction of multi-million dollar modernization programs. Your work will include planning, design, analysis, and engineering inputs into the construction and maintenance at a chemical plant facilities. You will assist in generating, checking and managing the mechanical design packages with collaboration from the design team. These packages will include drawings, specifications and diagrams that clearly define the mechanical construction package. These packages are issued to general contractors for construction on large scale modernization projects as well as smaller plant maintenance type upgrades. Working alongside mechanical engineers, you will provide technical oversight during the actual field installation and commissioning of equipment. As a mechanical designer, you will: o Create and edit mechanical drawings using Inventor, AutoCAD, and Revit models. o Work with a multi-discipline engineering team to perform plant and project engineering tasks and interface with site operations and maintenance teams. o Select construction materials and methods, write specifications, and prepare mechanical drawings. o Conduct inspections of existing facilities such as equipment and pipelines to determine the integrity and safety, and make recommendations concerning any needed modifications. o Create drawings used for construction, installation and procurement of mechanical equipment. o Assist engineering to ensure that work is performed in accordance with plans, specifications, and good construction practices and within cost during the execution phase. o Assist in commissioning plans and maintain field redline documentation as needed. o Consider safety in all aspects of work and design.Required Education, Experience, & Skills o Associate's degree in technology or drafting from an accredited university and 6+ years relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. o Ability to create mechanical drawings in CADD software for efficient production of engineering work designer must be proficient in AudoDesk software. o Ability to effectively review and approve design packages from equipment suppliers and design firms providing constructability input. o Ability to meet required deadlines while simultaneously completing other tasks. o A high degree of technical competence regarding the broad application of mechanical engineering principles to the development of new capabilities and/or solutions to customers’ challenging modernization problems. o Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards. o Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills. o Self-motivated with the ability to work in a team environment with a high level of attention to detail. o Capable of creating required engineering documentation using Microsoft Office Suite products including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Project, and Access. o May consider candidates with additional experience for a more senior role or with fewer years experience for a more junior role. What You'll Be Doing Job Scope: Generally responsible for performing all aspects for complete designs of small and large mechanical engineering assignments using theoretical knowledge and practical design methods. This work will be performed under general supervision. Primary responsibilities will include but not be limited to: • Develop and implement project specific mechanical engineering execution plans to ensure efficient and effective project execution. • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders, including all engineering disciplines, project managers, operations, and procurement, to ensure seamless project integration and successful project delivery. • Lead and manage the execution of mechanical engineering scope of work in all phases (Pre-FEED, FEED and Detail Design). • Monitors and reports actual progress and forecasting/check for discipline activities, including management of labor hours and delivered documents. • Lead the design and selection of stationary and rotating equipment considering factors such as safety, reliability, maintainability, cost, and schedule. • Prepare and review engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documents, ensuring compliance with industry standards, codes, and regulations. • Apply industry codes and standards relevant to the chemical industry, such as ASME, API, ANSI, and other applicable codes, in the design and evaluation of mechanical systems and equipment. • Oversee the procurement of mechanical equipment, ensuring adherence to project requirements and specifications. • Conduct thorough reviews and quality control checks to ensure compliance with design specifications and project requirements. • Utilize engineering design and management software tools and applications to support mechanical engineering activities and enhance project efficiency. Ideal Background Education: Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university is required. Registration: Professional Engineering registration is highly preferred. Experience: This position requires 3+ years of relevant industrial experience in mechanical engineering. In this position, you will be supporting the Ordnance Systems, Inc. (OSI) Business at our Kingsport, TN facility. In this role, you will be responsible for mechanical engineering and technical tasks to support design, construction and commissioning of multi-million dollar modernization programs. You will take process flow diagrams created by chemical engineers to specify mechanical equipment that meet required temperature and pressure ranges. You will provide technical oversight during the actual field installation and commissioning of equipment. This position requires a high degree of technical competence regarding the broad application of mechanical engineering principles to the development of new capabilities and/or solutions to customers’ challenging modernization problems.
