Mechanical Engineer ; NSSS System Design

Position: Mechanical Engineer 2 (NSSS System Design) POSITION SUMMARY: The NSSS System Engineering organization is focused on the NuScale Power Module System Design including Nuclear Steam Supply System (NSSS) system design, inspection and testing in accordance with nuclear industry codes, standards and regulatory requirements. Reporting to the Manager, NSSS System Design, the person in this role works in close collaboration with multiple disciplines in development of fluid systems and components within the NuScale Power Plant NSSS to support advancement of the design. All work within the NSSS Engineering organization is completed under the ASME NQA-1 quality assurance program and U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission guidelines. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Generate technical requirements for NSSS systems, structures and components. • Perform and check engineering evaluations in accordance with NuScale company procedures, by applying sound engineering judgement. • Support the preparation and review of engineering specifications, drawings, reports and other documentation that communicate the design and technical aspects of systems, structures and components associated with the nuclear steam supply system. • Interacts with co-workers and other disciplines to promote effective coordination of design activities and resolution of technical problems. Individuals should be interested in acquiring general knowledge of principles and practices of related fields in order to function on multi-disciplinary teams. • Support development and implementation of effective processes for system design specifications. • Possess strong written and oral communication skills. • Performs other duties as assigned.CORE COMPETENCIES: To perform the job successfully, the individual should demonstrate competencies in performing the essential functions of this position by performing satisfactorily in each of these competencies. • Problem solving : Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner, gathers and reviews information appropriately. MINIMUM SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS, AND ABILITIES: • Education : A minimum of a B.S. degree in Engineering (preferably Mechanical) or Mechanical Engineering Technology, from a four year ABET accredited college or university is required. A registered Engineer-in-Training (EIT) is desired. • Experience : A minimum of 2 years of nuclear/non-nuclear experience in mechanical engineering or related industry experience is required. Additional experience in the following areas include: • Thorough working knowledge and experience in various areas of engineering is required. • Development of technical programs related to design, examination and testing is required. • Strong technical writing skills as well as good communication, computer, presentation and interpersonal skills and ability to clearly communicate. • Good organization skills and ability to manage complex projects with multiple work phases is required. • Industry Requirements : Eligible to work under Department of Energy 10 CFR Part 810. As an Engineer in DEA’s Energy Business Unit, you will be responsible for the physical design and layout of substations supporting wind, solar, and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. You’ll work on the detailed arrangement of equipment, buswork, grounding, conduit, and structures to ensure safe, functional, and cost-effective designs. This role will collaborate closely with P&C, civil/structural, and project management teams to deliver complete substation packages from concept to issued-for-construction (IFC) plans. This hybrid-friendly position offers flexibility, with a preference for candidates near one of DEA’s offices in California, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Texas, Utah, or Washington. Fully remote work may be considered. Some travel for site visits and project execution may be required. What You’ll Do Key Responsibilities: • Exemplify DEA’s Cultural Drivers internally and externally. • Develop substation general arrangement drawings from conceptual design through IFC, including equipment layout, foundation plans, conduit and grounding plans, and section/elevation views. • Design and model high-voltage bus configurations, equipment clearances, and structure arrangements consistent with client standards and applicable codes (e.g., NESC, IEEE, ASCE). • Prepare and review detailed drawings, bills of material (BOMs), and construction specifications. • Coordinate closely with P&C, civil, and structural engineers to produce complete design packages. • Provide technical input for cost estimates, material procurement, and constructability reviews. • Support project execution during construction through submittal reviews, RFI responses, and field coordination. • Ensure adherence to quality standards and design accuracy across all deliverables. What You Bring Required Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university. • Four (4)+ years of relevant substation physical design experience. • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) or ability to obtain within one year. • Working knowledge of substation equipment (circuit breakers, transformers, disconnects, buswork, etc.) and layout design principles. • Strong teamwork, organization, and communication skills.
