Preferred Qualifications: Background in machining with a minimum of 3 years experience. Position Summary: Work involves the application of mechanical skills to the maintenance and fabrication of instructional, experimental, research, and operational apparatus and equipment used in laboratories, classrooms, maintenance shops and farming. Work emphasis is on the fabrication or apparatus for lab and research purposes and the maintenance of such equipment. Employees will exercise some discretion and judgement in determining techniques and methods for completion of the work and to develop a basic understanding of the subject field to which assigned. Assignments are received from instructional or research personnel either by sketches, blueprints and diagrams or orally. Unusual or special assignments are reviewed primarily by observation of results obtained. This position will travel to different campus buildings to repair equipment and pick up materials as needed. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies: • Use of Industrial powered vehicles, hazmat training. • Basic understanding of how to read blueprints. Duties/Responsibilities: Operates, maintains, repairs, cleans, rewires, greases, and rebuilds machinery and equipment. Percentage of time: 25 Duties/Responsibilities: Constructs and assembles components for experiments using various types of metal working tools, such as lathes, mills, drills, welding equipment, CNC mills, CNC lathes, CNC fiber laser, CO2 laser and sheet metal tools. Percentage of time: 25 Duties/Responsibilities: Uses vehicle to deliver or pick up parts, pick up or make deliveries of repaired/new scientific equipment Percentage of time: 20 Duties/Responsibilities: Fabricates, modifies, and repairs varied mechanical and electrical apparatus, devices, and test models for experimental, instructional, research, testing, processing, and operational purposes which may involve machine work, welding, sheet metal fabrication, and electrical repairs; assembles and disassembles test models. Essential Functions The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for creating mechanical and structural designs that enable fabricators to construct industrial and commercial projects. The role also requires preparation of detail drawings for client approval while assisting Project Managers, Estimators, Fabricators, and Erectors to accurately create mechanical systems and structures. • Utilize CAD software to prepare detail designs of mechanical systems and structural assemblies. • Develops mechanical and electromechanical products by studying customer requirements; researching and testing manufacturing and assembly methods and materials; soliciting observations from operators to offer a better value. • Create bills of materials to accurately estimate cost. • Work closely on developing construction plans with clients, architects, engineers, and other professionals as necessary. • Coordinate projects with sales and production departments. • Check drawings of other draftsmen to minimize risk of error. • Provide timely responses to inquiries from purchasing, production, and installation teams. Education and Experience • Bachelor Degree from an accredited university or technical school specializing in mechanical or structural design required. • Minimum of two years mechanical design and/or structural detailing experience required. • Recent experience with both Solid Works and AutoCAD. • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously. • Outstanding ability to read and understand construction specifications and drawings. • Proven understanding of both fabrication and installation. • Computer experience, including but not limited to Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, Project, and Outlook.
