Masonry Construction Instructor

JOB SUMMARY: The purpose of the Building Trades and Construction Instructor is to perform under general supervision, to supervise and instruct students in assigned areas of vocational training and career development; to establish and maintain an orderly, safe and well-disciplined classroom learning environment; develop and prepare curriculum outlines and daily lesson plans as well as other related education materials as required; follow policies and procedures for the classroom; check student work, assign grades, maintain student progress reports and attendance records; facilitate disciplinary action when appropriate and in compliance with MITA polices; maintain inventory of tools and equipment. This position is project driven. Various hours and project locations which would be decided by the hire. MIA provides 60-hour masonry classes and seminar/workshops with high School Students. We provide masonry apprentice training at three sites, all of which are evening classes. REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS: Documents required to apply: Letter of Introduction and a Resume. Experience: Three (3) years of work experience in the technical skills, trade, or vocations to be taught are required. Preference will be given to individuals skilled in the masonry trade. One (1) of the three (3) years’ experience must be within the last five (5) years, or two (2) years within the last (10) years. If an applicant has a construction background and teaching experience, they would be considered for the position. Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required. Training: Training to teach will be provided by MITA. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: SKILLS are required to perform multiple technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills to meet changing job requirements. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include skills to instruct students in construction trades; to effectively plan, develop and implement programs related to assignment; and skills to effectively communicate orally and in writing. KNOWLEDGE of the subject area(s) appropriate for the class being taught; knowledge of building, construction trades practices; knowledge of masonry, mortar preparation, grading and drainage, water and wastewater systems, types of block/brick pavers, cultured stone, architectural design, project development, construction drawings, health and safety procedures, and equipment operation. ABILITY to demonstrate and teach building and construction techniques; ability to establish appropriate learning goals and objectives as well as effective lesson plans; ability to communicate orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with industry; and to safely and effectively use trade tools and equipment. RESPONSIBILITES include working with a developed curriculum and lesson plans, working within budgets and program guidelines. WORKING ENVIRONMENT involves the use of a computer to present to students and to maintain student records; outdoor work for lab instruction; and labor involving lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling for lab demonstrations.
