HVACR Technician positions perform skilled installation, maintenance, and repair work on heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration; chillers and boilers; install and repair automatic and electrical control systems; perform electrical and mechanical tests; read blueprints and plans; estimate time and materials; maintain computerized records; apply productivity time guidelines and other required data to work repair forms as directed; lead the work and training of apprentices and other assigned personnel; and perform other duties as assigned. NOTES: • Employees in job classifications represented by AFSME Local 127 are scheduled to receive the following general wage increase: 5% effective 7/1/25 • In addition to the scheduled general wage increase, the following special salary wage increase is also scheduled to take effect for HVACR Technician: 5% effective 1/1/26 • Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS). • HVACR Technician employees are required to work both indoors and outdoors, sometimes in extreme weather conditions or a cramped workspace, and may be exposed to hazards of building maintenance (e.g., lead, asbestos). • Employees assigned to the Asbestos Containment Team (Team) shall receive additional compensation of $1.25 per hour while performing asbestos containment work. • HVACR Technicians employees may require working on a stand-by basis for which they may receive 5% additional pay. • A $1.25 per hour Special Assignment Pay shall be paid to employees assigned to perform confined space entries. • If work conditions require it, HVACR Technician employees may be required to be clean-shaven in order to meet respiratory requirements and be able to pass a respiratory fitness test utilizing a self-contained breathing apparatus. • HVACR Technician employees are required to perform physical tasks including lifting, stooping, bending, squatting, reaching, and twisting. You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: You must meet ONE of the following options: • Successful completion of a state-accredited four or five-year Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic or Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning Technician Apprenticeship Program. • Four years of full-time experience performing work as a journey-level Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning Technician. Qualifying experience MUST include installing, maintaining, and repairing the following: Refrigeration; ventilating; and combined heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Air conditioning systems MUST meet capacities of five tons or more to qualify. • An equivalent combination of experience and apprenticeship training as specified above that equals four years. NOTE: • City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered. CERTIFICATE: A valid Universal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Section 608 Certificate. LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire. HIGHLY DESIRABLE: • College-level course work in Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, and Environmental Control Technology or HVAC. • Experience with chillers, boilers, pool boilers, and/or gas appliances.
