HVAC Mechanic II

Description Of Work Unit And/or Division The Construction and Facilities Management Office (CFMO) is responsible for all engineering issues that affect National Guard facilities statewide, to include programming, design, and construction of new facilities. Existing facilities are maintained, modified or expanded, and utilities consumption is monitored. Environmental compliance is ensured by means of conscientious monitoring of training activities and other potentially damaging activities including construction. The work within the CFMO is highly dynamic in nature, requiring employees to learn and embrace new technologies, procedures, policies and criteria. Primary Duties / Responsibilities Of Position This position serves on the maintenance support team (east) for the Facility Management Department of the North Carolina National Guard. The employee will be responsible for conducting preventive maintenance visits on approximately 30 National Guard Facilities in the eastern part of the state. The employee will also be required to conduct more complex repairs as directed by management. This is technical work in the analysis of the more complex construction, modification, or repair problems in building heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment or systems. This position is responsible for independently troubleshooting heating, ventilation, or air conditioning problems, recommend parts needed and work procedures, and serving as working supervisors in the construction, modification, or repair. This employee serves as a technical expert in one or more areas of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning field such as absorption and centrifugal chillers or electrical, pneumatic, and electronic controls, through advising other mechanics on repair problems and providing training in their areas of expertise. Work is performed independently usually under the general supervision of an air conditioning supervisor and is reviewed through the proper operation of equipment and the effectiveness of repairs. Note to Current State Employees The salary grade for this position is NC10.  State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position.  If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity.  Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result. Other Preferences Although not required, management prefers experienced, skilled workers that may have a recognized construction trade license (e.g., general contractor, electrician, or plumber). Per 5 CFR 731, upon appointment, applicant must be able to obtain a favorable suitability and fitness determination from a Tier 1 background investigation conducted by the Office of Personnel Management. Failure to obtain a favorable determination may result in termination of employment.
