Position: HVAC Technician Job Type: Full Time Department: Housing Location: BIG CYPRESS Posted: 07/28/2025 Job Description The incumbent in this position performs a wide variety of skilled tasks involved in the maintenance and repair of ventilation, heating and air conditioning units related to the care and maintenance of STOF residences, buildings and facilities. High school diploma or GED equivalent is required. Appropriate specialized training in the skills needed in heating and air-conditioning systems repair and installation is required. A minimum of four (4) years of journeyman experience in heating, air-conditioning and energy management, two of which were spent in commercial HVAC is required. Possession of an EPA Refrigerant Technician Type I and II certification is preferred. Possession of an EPA Refrigerant Technician Universal certification within six months of the date of appointment is recommended. Must possess a valid Florida Driver's license. Ability to travel to all STOF Reservations and work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays; and be on call 24/7 for emergencies is a requirement of this position. The mission of Facilities Management and Building Construction at the Florida Department of Corrections is to provide a safe, secure, and efficient environment for staff, inmates, and visitors. This is achieved through the effective management, maintenance, and construction of correctional facilities, ensuring they meet all regulatory standards and support the department's overall mission of public safety and rehabilitation. This position is not a telework position and is required to report to the FDC office in the area it serves. JOB DUTIES: This working position is responsible for the installation and repair of heating, air conditioning and refrigeration components and associated systems, food service equipment necessary to operate a major institution. This position will provide on the job training to those inmates he/she supervises in HVAC and associated systems. • Responsible for the installation and repair of HVAC and refrigeration systems, as well as food service equipment, and provides on-the-job training to supervised inmates. • Maintains records on refrigerant use and recovery in compliance with DEP regulations and performs technical preventive maintenance on various HVAC systems. • Installs new electronic, pneumatic, and digital control systems, and diagnoses problems with HVAC and closed loop systems. • Performs tasks related to HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and building preventive maintenance, and prepares necessary reports as directed by the Maintenance Superintendent. • Maintains custody and control of supervised inmates, prepares progress reports for their rehabilitation, and participates in required departmental staff training.
