An employee in this class receives and processes work orders relating to the installation, maintenance, and repair of air conditioning and heating equipment, ice machines, cooling towers, pumps, pneumatic equipment, water coolers, and other related equipment for various facilities citywide. This is skilled, journeyman level mechanic work of more than average difficulty in the installation, maintenance and repair of air conditioning and related equipment. The employee usually works alone under general supervision and must exercise reasonable initiative and independent judgment in determining action to be taken. The omission of a function does not preclude management from assigning essential duties not listed herein if such duties relate to the position. • Performs preventative maintenance on HVAC equipment, including changing or cleaning filters, adjusting or changing belts, greasing bearings, cleaning drain pans and coils, and checking overall operation of equipment • Repairs watercoolers, ice machines and refrigerators • May operate power tools in maintenance and repair work, including such shop tools as drill press, grinder and bench saw • Operates a panel or pick-up truck and communicates by two-way radio Installs HVAC equipment in accordance with local and national codes • Prepares and prioritizes work schedules; purchases parts and equipment • Responds to service calls; inspects malfunctioning equipment; diagnoses, repairs, and replaces equipment • Reviews bids and proposals from contractors; coordinates schedules; attends meetings; reviews job plans and blueprints • Maintains records on service and repair of equipment; prepares and submits reports • Recommends the replacement of air conditioning systems; participates in the preparation of specifications for acquisition of new equipment; recommends equipment purchases • Performs related work as required • High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalency, or trade school certificate • Three (3) to five (5) years of Journey level experience in the maintenance and repair of air conditioning and refrigeration systems, including commercial air conditioning experience. • Depending on assignment, work experience in the maintenance and repair of central units up to seventy-five (75) tons capacity, air handlers and cooling towers. • Journeyman Mechanical Certificate of Competency in air conditioning issued by Broward County. • Possess or be able to obtain a valid State of Florida driver's license within 30 days after hire. • If claiming Veteran's Preference, candidates must attach a DD214 Member 4 form, and the City of Fort Lauderdale's veteran's preference claim form (J-204) to the online application.
