H.V.A.C. Technician I

Summary: The HVAC Technician I performs maintenance and repairs to HVAC equipment on Casper College facilities. Responsibilities: Under the general supervision of the Master HVAC Technician, the journeyman maintains, repairs and installs heating and air conditioning systems, controls and equipment throughout College facilities. The position maintains and provides for the safe condition and operation of HVAC systems in College facilities. The position works daily with the Master HVAC Technician and reports to the Building Maintenance Supervisor. Performs other duties as assigned. • Diagnose and repair malfunctions in various types of heating and air conditioning systems, including rooftop equipment. Repair, replace, or calibrate controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring. • Wire and connect motors, compressors, temperature controls, and humidity controls according to wiring schematics. • Be aware of and perform tasks consistent with the standards established by the national, state, county and city codes pertaining to the uniform plumbing and mechanical codes. • Maintain an accurate accounting of all refrigerants used while performing assigned tasks. • Maintain preventive maintenance schedules and procedures for all HVAC equipment, including changing of filters and cleaning condensers and coils, and coordinate with Maintenance Technician I and IIs. • Inform the Building Maintenance Supervisor or their designee, on a daily basis, of any potential problems, failures that could occur and needed improvements that relate to the proper operation of the HVAC systems on College facilities. • Report all shut off, locked out and tagged equipment that was isolated within the workday to the Building Maintenance Supervisor or his/her designee. • Maintain accurate records on material and labor used. Maintain inventory of College owned tools, supplies, equipment and materials. • Detect needed repairs on equipment following established inspection procedures. Inspect jobs upon completion and ensure areas are clean and all covers and guards reinstalled. • Carry and utilize two-way radio during working hours. • Carries and responds to College provided cell phone. • Removes snow and ice from steps, sidewalks, and entries; applies ice melt. • Reports all accidents to their Supervisor. Minimum Qualifications: • High School Diploma or equivalent • Minimum of 4 years of relevant work experience with HVAC systems, plumbing, and heating repair • Ability and willingness to perform physical labor for full shift (8 hours), sometimes more than a full shift (over 8 hours), with or without a reasonable accommodation • Requires working knowledge of plumbing, heating and HVAC systems • Ability to maintain a professional, effective and collegial working relationship with co-workers, the public and all campus constituent groups communicating effectively both verbally and in writing Preferred Qualifications: • Completion of an HVAC training course Licenses/Certifications: • Valid motor vehicle license at the time of hire and must obtain a Wyoming driver’s license within 30 days of hire. Must maintain insurability under the College’s insurance plan. Work Environment: The normal work environment is inside building classrooms, labs, offices and mechanical spaces requiring normal to heightened safety precautions. The typical work schedule is 6:00 A.M. to 2:30 P.M. Monday through Friday. Noise levels are usually normal to moderate; occasionally being loud and requiring hearing protection. Requires daily work inside and outside in extreme cold, wet or hot areas around HVAC chemicals. Requires daily work climbing ladders, working in high areas, rooftops, crawl spaces, mechanical rooms, and confined areas with heavy tools and equipment. Must maintain critical availability for emergency repairs especially during extremely cold weather as safety becomes a factor. May be called back after hours, on weekends, and holidays for emergencies, special assignments, snow removal and/or any other activity which requires the position's presence on campus and/or at the assigned work station. Call back assignments are at the discretion of the HVAC Tech Master or Building Maintenance Supervisor. Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; sit; climb or balance; stoop; kneel; crouch; or crawl; and talk; or hear. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include those needed to operate College vehicles and equipment, see close-up, differentiate color, have peripheral vision and depth perception.
