The City of Kingston is looking for a full-time Traffic Electrician to perform skilled electrical work on traffic signals and pole-mounted outdoor lighting; Install, inspect, maintain and repair traffic signal and pole-mounted outdoor light; maintain an on-call status to ensure the safe operation of the traffic signals and City lighting systems; perform other duties as required within the scope of the classification. May work on City owned buildings, parks, infrastructure and equipment related to the electric field. The Traffic Electrician performs journey level, skilled electrical work on traffic signals and pole-mounted outdoor lighting. May provide on the job training to Traffic Electrician Trainee and oversight to lower-level employees. The qualified candidate will have thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of traffic signal and pole mounted outdoor lighting electrical work; knowledge of applicable regulations and codes including the National Electrical Code and State of New York Standard Plans and Specifications; good knowledge of computer and diagnostic testing; ability to operate hand tools, power tools and electrical test equipment properly; ability to read, interpret, and analyze applicable federal, state, and city codes as well as traffic signal and pole lighting manuals and industry periodicals. Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from High School or possession of a High School Equivalency diploma and four (4) years’ experience in traffic signal and/or pole-mounted outdoor lighting electrical systems, including work with high and low voltages. LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION: • Ability to obtain a New York State CDL Class B license within 6 months of appointment. • Level One International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Certificate within twelve (12) months of appointment. • Level Two International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Certificate must be obtained within twenty-four (24) months of employment. • Obtain a City of Kingston Electrical License within six (6) months of appointment. PHYSICAL TASK & ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: The work is primarily performed in an outdoor setting with exposure to the elements, dangerous machinery and potential physical harm. There is a frequent need to walk, talk, see, hear or drive; ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and perform other actions during the workday. Must be able to work at heights of 60 feet out of an aerial truck. Sufficient mobility and dexterity of both arms to safely operate power equipment.
