Electrician II

UIHC Engineering Services is seeking a full time Electrician II. This position will be scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday with additional hours as needed. Under general supervision, applies knowledge, skills and abilities at the journey level to install and repair electrical systems and equipment (generally less than 600V). Demonstrates Journeyman Electrician qualifications, training, experience and technical knowledge. Responsible for the coordination and accomplishment of maintenance, operations and modifications. Performs the duties peculiar to, and normally required in, the trade of electrician, following recognized procedures and techniques for such work. Utilizes special tools, equipment, and processes (such as insulation testers, thermal imaging cameras and Thermal/Infrared (TIR) Predictive Testing procedures) to collect, perform initial diagnostics, and respond to data through established guidelines for preventive and predictive maintenance to ensure equipment reliability. CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Performs all duties listed under Electrician I. • Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, repairs and replaces 600 volts and less electrical distribution systems and related equipment, including but not limited to main panel board control systems, programmable controls, solid state control systems, step up and down transformers, current and potential transformers, protective field devices, line monitoring equipment and VFD's. • Installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs control systems including lighting, programmable controllers, and building heating and cooling system programmable controllers. • Performs preventive maintenance on electrical equipment systems and control systems. • As required, will commission 600 volts and less electrical distribution systems and related equipment, and control systems. MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: • Requires State of Iowa Class A Journeyman Electrician license with at least four years as an apprentice plus two years of experience as a journeyman electrician; or • State of Iowa Class B Journeyman Electrician license with eight years in the electrical trade in maintenance or construction. • Must possess a valid driver's license and meet University's Fleet Safety Program. Electrician I \$5,000 Sign-On

About the position Responsibilities • Install, operate, troubleshoot, maintain and repair electric utility systems including low voltage power distribution systems, switchgear, protection and control systems, lighting, ventilation and pumping systems, battery systems, instrumentation, motor starters and controls, and conduit, cable and wiring systems operating at less than 600 volts. • Determine jobsite work sequences and safety procedures required, procure materials, coordinate outages, complete work, and place systems back into service. • Interpret and maintain wiring diagrams, schematics, and update system logs, drawings, and documentation on utility systems. • Work around and with medium voltage (600 volts to 15kV) utility systems under the direction of High Voltage Electricians. Requirements • High school diploma or GED. • State of Iowa Class A or B Journeyman Electrician license. • Journey level electrician with experience in the trade preferred, particularly with utility systems in a utility, power plant or industrial environment. • Valid State issued Driver's License; Commercial driver's license is desirable. • Ability to arrive at the facility within one hour when on call. • Knowledge of electric utility systems and equipment. • Knowledge of tools and methods necessary to troubleshoot and maintain electrical utility equipment. • Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques used in the electrical trade. • Knowledge of the trade occupational hazards and safety precautions while working in confined spaces, aerial or elevated locations, extreme temperatures, excavations, and other environmental conditions. • Knowledge of electrical codes, utility standards, and safety programs as governed by rules, regulations and guidelines of local, state, and national electrical and safety codes, equipment manufacturers and others. • Ability to read and understand blueprints, schematics, control system drawings and repair manuals. • Ability to perform basic math computations. • Ability to maintain records and system documentation. • Ability to analyze system problems, recommend and implement system changes. • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with other department personnel, vendors and suppliers, students, staff, and the general public. • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
